Decanter

The quality of this 2016 just shines. It’s packed with plump fruit, with great balance and plenty of Margaux typicity—plump red and black berry fruits and lifted floral aromatics—an exemplary second wine. And from a yield of 55 hl/ha; a great example of how (low) yields are not a necessary indicator of quality. Some menthol notes on the finish as well; this is juicy and although you could drink it now, it will develop further in bottle.

James Suckling

Very pretty and finely formed with currant, cherry and raspberry character. Medium to full body, firm and silky tannins and a long and fresh finish. Fine textured. Lovely second wine for d’Issan.

Vinous

Antonio Galloni

The 2016 Blason d'Issan is a plump, forward second wine from Issan. Sweet tobacco, cedar, leather and licorice add character to this supple, fruity Margaux. Drink it over the next few years.

Falstaff

Falstaff

Dark ruby, purple reflections, subtle edge brightening. Ripe cherry fruit, a hint of chocolate, delicate orange zest, inviting bouquet. Medium body, round and sweet, fine acidity, delicate tannins, already easy to drink, delicately salty finish.

The Wine Independent

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

A blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 60% Merlot, the 2016 Blason d’Issan has a deep garnet color, with a touch of purple. It strolls out with confident cassis, blackberry pie, and tobacco leaf scents, with touches of pencil shavings and fragrant earth. Medium-bodied, the palate delivers a firm, grainy texture and plenty of freshness to offset the ripe black fruits, finishing with an herbal lift.

Garnet-red color. The bouquet of Blason d'Issan shows very good intensity, perfectly combining fruit, freshness, and spice. The élevage is subtly present through chocolatey notes. On the palate, the wine is indulgent, balanced, and already very approachable. It will be enjoyable in its youth. Good glou-glou!

Jean-Marc Quarin

Dark, intense, beautiful purple color. An aromatic, fruity nose, subtly lifted by a hint of pine wood. A very caressing palate, with a supple yet present body. The wine caresses the palate and finishes delicate and delicious, with good length and no hard edges. It’s very good.

Description

A second wine from Margaux with crunchy tannins

The property
The Château d’Issan is a Bordeaux vintage renowned since the 12th century. It is part of history as one of those exceptional vintages served at the tables of kings and emperors. The Blason d’Issan, Second Wine of Château d’Issan was created in 1995.

The vineyard
Second wine of Château d'Issan, Blason d'Issan is a red wine produced under the Margaux appellation. With an average age of 35 years, the 44-hectare vineyard is planted on gravelly hills and alluvial hills.

The vintage

Blason d'Issan, like the first wine, was able to benefit from exceptional climatic conditions. The weather context was contrasted: a lot of rain from January 1st to early June, a miraculous homogeneous flowering thanks to a window of good weather at the best time, then a hot and dry summer. The saving rains of September 13th allowed to restart the maturation of the berries, then the Indian summer, with its strong thermal amplitudes, allowed to definitively perfect the maturation of the grapes before the harvest, which went perfectly from September 29th to October 19th.

Vinification and aging
The wine is aged in barrels, with a proportion of 35% new barrels.

Blend
60% merlot and 40% cabernet sauvignon.
