Wine Spectator

Kim Marcus

Structured and well-knit, with rich acidity backing red currant and dark cherry flavors that show notes of black olive. Slate and tarry hints midpalate lead to a finish powered by accents of forest floor. Drink now through 2028. 430 cases made, 150 cases imported.

James Suckling

This is really something. There’s purity and focus to the aromas of crushed berries, licorice and black tea, which follow through to an integrated palate of extremely fine, melted tannins that spread to the very ends of the wine. This is all about balance and length. It really is an emotional wine. Great follow-up to the 2017, which was also 100 points. Drinkable now, but better after 2024.

Vinous

Joaquín Hidalgo

Riverstone is a 1.6-hectare parcel of Malbec grown in a dry river bed of stones coated in calcium carbonate. The winemaking process begins with fermentation in 500-liter barrels, followed by 20 months’ aging in French oak barrels. Expressive, like all wines grown in stony soil, this is also fruity with notes of sour cherry, raspberry and lavender. The palate is quite intense, offering hints of chalk that define the texture and a saline flavor that enhances and channels the effect in the mouth.

Description

A rich and exuberant fine Argentinian wine

The estate

The pioneering Nicola Catena founded Bodega Catena Zapata in 1902, planting his first plots of Malbec within the exceptional vineyard in Mendoza, Argentina.

This family estate, in a constant quest for excellence, exprienced a new boom when it was taken over by Nicolás Catena Zapata in the 1960s. With the wish to revolutionise production methods for Argentine wines, Nicolás Catena Zapata is inspired by the vinification of Napa Valley wines and is revealing new, high-altitude terroirs to magnify the expression of the grape varieties.

Nicknamed "South America’s Grand Cru," Bodega Catena Zapata is a renowned international reference, recognised by critics for the finesse and elegance of these Argentinian wines.

The vineyard

Adrianna Vineyard River Malbec 2018 by Catena Zapata is a Mendoza wine that stems from a small plot in the Adrianna vineyard, which was fomerly a riverbed and which is completely covered with white pebbles similar to those that can be found in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The drainage there is excellent and temperatures are extreme due to the stones’ thermal inertia, which restores the heat accumulated during the day and function well as figurative blocks of ice after very cold nights.

Winemaking and ageing

Fermentations are carried out with indigenous yeasts in barrels at temperatures between 25 and 30°C for 10-15 days. Ageing lasts for 20 months in French oak barrels, with specificities selected according to the vintage.
