An exceptional blend from the Uco Valley in Mendoza
The estate
Founded in 1902 by Nicola Catena, an Italian immigrant, Bodega Catena Zapata remains one of the few family-owned and independent Argentine wine estates. Located in Mendoza, in the Uco Valley, it spans 200 hectares across six historic plots planted at altitudes between 1,000 and 1,500 metres. Laura Catena, a doctor and fourth-generation winemaker, now runs the estate alongside her father Nicolás. A pioneer of the Argentine Malbec revival, the bodega revolutionised high-altitude viticulture as early as the 1980s.
The vineyard
The Nicolás Catena Zapata 2022 comes from two exceptional terroirs located in the Uco Valley in Mendoza. The Adrianna vineyard, planted in 1992, sits at 1,450 metres above sea level on clay-loam soils. The Nicasia vineyard, established in 1996, lies at 1,095 metres above sea level on similar soils. These vines come from massal selections and are grown ungrafted, on their own roots.
The vintage
The 2022 vintage is described by winemaker Alejandro Vigil as “the best year I have ever experienced”.
Winemaking and aging
The grapes are harvested by hand. Fermentation takes place in small oak barrels, concrete and stainless-steel tanks at temperatures between 26 and 28°C for around 15 days. The Nicolás Catena Zapata 2022 undergoes a total maceration of between 18 and 22 days, followed by malolactic fermentation. Ageing continues for 18 months in French oak barrels. The final blend selection is overseen by Dr. Nicolás Catena Zapata prior to bottling.
Grape varieties
46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Malbec and 10% Cabernet Franc make up this exceptional wine.
