Description
A powerful Sauternes wine with a seductive freshness
The estate
Château Rieussec is located in the prestigious Sauternes appellation, in the south of the Bordeaux region. This château is steeped in history and belonged to the Carmelite monks of Langon in the 18th century. It was then sold as "National Property" following the French Revolution. Classified as an 1855 Sauternes Premier Grand Cru, Château Rieussec was acquired by the Rothschild family in 1984.
The vineyard
The estate’s Second Vin, Carmes de Rieussec, is a Sauternes wine that stems from a sandy-clay gravel terroir. The vineyard of Château Rieussec is situated on the border between Fargues and Sauternes and covers 93 hectares, thus making it one of the largest estates in the appellation.
The vintage
A mild winter preceded a spring during which the frost on April 26th and 27th affected 15% of the vineyard. Subsequently, the warm and slightly humid conditions favoured an early flowering period which lasted 10 days. The heavy rainfall at the end of June was followed by below-normal temperatures throughout the summer. A rainy spell in mid-September gave way to dry and relatively cool weather, ideal for ensuring good ripening of the grapes. The harvest took place from September 26th to October 12th and gave rise to a vintage with a rare aromatic intensity.
The blend
Sémillon (94%)
Sauvignon Blanc (3%)
Muscadelle (3%).
