Robert Parker

Neal Martin

The 2013 Belgrave has a light, rather stemmy/green nose that is missing the vigor of recent vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with a sour entry, bitter in the mouth with a sharp, dry finish. I find it difficult to find many redeeming features in what is usually a very upstanding Haut-Médoc and I put that down to the difficult growing season.

Wine Spectator

James Molesworth

Gentle plum and blood orange flavors are carried by silky tannins and backed by a savory note. Noticeably shy on stuffing, but what's there is fresh and clean. Drink now. 9,417 cases made.

Decanter

Dense colour, well-extracted berry fruit, quite fleshy and good tannins for the future.

James Suckling

A fresh, minerally red with lemon zest, strawberry and stone aromas and flavors. Medium body, fine tannins and a clean finish. Delicious now. Drink or hold.

Dark purple colour, fresh nose of dark berries, gently roasted with cassis, plum and coffee. The palate is fresh and rounded with balanced tannin, clarity of flavor and a fresh, long finish.

René Gabriel

70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot. Deep purple, dense at the core, with garnet highlights at the rim. Beautiful sweet-tinged cherry bouquet, floral Cabernet notes mingled with fine woods. On the palate, supple, fleshy tannins, a slight grip, and good substance. Will develop in a classic style. Has room to improve.

André Kunz

(51% Merlot, 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot) Elegant, delicate, silky bouquet; blueberries, subtle cassis, cedar, roasted notes. Balanced, finely structured palate with good fruit, powdery tannins, firm bitters, dry finish. Can improve further. 16/20 2020 - 2034

Bettane+Desseauve

Tender, easy, clean, moderately complex but well balanced for the year.

La RVF

It offers an open nose with pleasant fruity notes. The palate is still a little firm, but well built and balanced. Lovely, fine length.

Le Figaro Vin

A lovely, very elegant wine with violet aromas, fine tannins, and a pretty medium-bodied finish.

Yves Beck

Medium garnet red. A bouquet defined by freshness with hints of mint and eucalyptus. On the palate, the wine is juicy, moreish and already quite approachable. A gourmet wine, very interesting in the context of the vintage.

Tasting characteristics and advice for Château Belgrave 2013

Tasting

The color displays a deep ruby-red hue with lovely violet highlights.

Nose

The nose reveals fine aromatic complexity with notes of black fruit, notably blackcurrant and blackberry. Hints of licorice and spices mingle with subtle mineral touches that reflect the Graves terroir.

Palate

The attack is velvety and elegant. The palate offers a well-balanced structure with silky, refined tannins. The lively, lingering finish delivers lovely fruity freshness, supported by a mineral tension that invites you to extend the tasting.

Food and wine pairings

This wine pairs perfectly with grilled red meats, notably a roasted beef tenderloin or beef medallions. It also goes very well with a leg of lamb with seasonal vegetables or a fine poultry such as roasted quail. Dishes featuring wild forest mushrooms also make a harmonious pairing.

Serving and cellaring

The finesse and texture of a Haut-Médoc wine

The estate

Founded in 1845 by Bruno Devez, Château Belgrave is a 5th Grand Cru Classé of 1855 located in the heart of the Médoc in Bordeaux, on 60 hectares of deep gravel soils, at the gates of Saint-Julien. At the beginning of the 20th century, Marcel Alibert definitively established the name “Belgrave” and distinguished himself in defending the classified growths. Since 1979, the estate has belonged to Maison Dourthe. The ferret on the label recalls the former hunting lodge the estate originally was.

The vineyard

The Château Belgrave vineyard stretches over deep gravel soils characteristic of the Haut-Médoc. Thanks to its privileged location and gravelly soils, this terroir gives the wines their mineral identity and elegant structure.

The vintage

The 2013 vintage proved demanding from a climatic standpoint. Weather conditions required increased vigilance in the vineyard and rigorous sorting at harvest to select only grapes that had reached optimal ripeness.

Winemaking and aging

Château Belgrave 2013 was carefully vinified in temperature-controlled vats. Aging took place in French oak barrels, allowing the wine to develop its aromatic complexity while preserving the finesse of its tannins and the expression of its terroir.
