Robert Parker

Robert M. Parker, Jr.

This beautiful 2003 exhibits a dense ruby/purple color, a vigorous youthfulness, and plenty of mulberry, black currant and cherry fruit intermixed with notions of cedarwood, baking spices and roasted herbs. Ripe, medium to full-bodied, fresh and precise, this wine is just hitting full maturity where it should remain for another 10-15 years.

Loads of crushed berries, with mineral, lightly toasted oak and licorice. Full-bodied, with big, velvety tannins and a long, caressing finish. This is the sleeper of the vintage. Best after 2010. 17,500 cases made.

Very fruity, with blackberries, spices and flowers. Almost raisiny. Full, round, and pretty, with a lovely soft tannin structure and a long, long finish. This is pretty and balanced. Will be at its best if you wait three or four years. Find the wine

This continues aging and developing in a positive direction, the wine offers its sweet, ripe, spicy, earthy blackberry, tobacco, cigar box and cedar qualities with ease. Full bodied, with round tannins and an expressive finish, time in the cellar will allow this to continue adding more softness and complexities.

As so often, a rather racy, powerful Saint-Estèphe bouquet with a lovely sweetness, yet finely delineated with forest floor and truffle. On the palate, muscular with regal breed and grip, rich in extract with good depth and that distinctive “gout de terroir,” highly mineral with “gravel-like” reminiscences, elegant tannins, a slightly sweet texture and a long finish. Classy!

04: Impressively deep color with many violet highlights. Spicy, profound bouquet; bay leaves, tobacco, and plenty of blueberries, with a thick sweetness and a light honey sheen. Creamy, opulent palate with fine, fleshy tannins, lots of cooked plum, and a lovely breed that balances the overall opulence, with plenty of blackberry in the surprisingly rich finish. The owner, Madame Denise Casqueton, told us that in her long life in wine she had never seen Cabernet grapes as beautiful at harvest. And these evidently most beautiful Cabernets also gave her the most beautiful wine from Calon-Ségur. This great yet extremely delicate St. Estèphe is better than its own 2000 vintage! Tasted three times in total.

Velvety, dense, profound, complex bouquet of plum, tobacco, currants, nougat, rosemary. Dense, powerful, multi-layered palate with fine tannins, concentrated structure, diverse dark aromatics, compact finish. 19/20 drink - 2035

Cedar and spice aromas strongly marked by cabernet sauvignon, with the vintage’s full, pure and generous character; great length, not yet fully harmonized.

Logo on the cork: A (Amorim) Dark colour, medium intensity and evolved. Moderately aromatic nose, fruity, fresh, with a Merlot-like character. Suave. Round, tasty, pleasant palate with medium body and length, but a touch dry on the finish. Looking back at its history, I note that this slight dryness has always characterized this wine. Enjoy with a rich, fatty dish.

Wine Enthusiast

Roger Voss

A powerfully velvety wine, which still packs a walloping punch of Saint-Estèphe tannins. The fruit, under these tannins, is pure, ripe, black and generous. But there is the proper dryness that shows how the team at Calon-Sègur managed to tame some of the excesses of the 2003 vintage. This will develop, slowly, into a great wine. Imported by Diageo Chateau & Estates.

Description

Characteristics and tasting advice for Château Calon Ségur 2003

Tasting

Appearance

The color reveals a deep ruby red hue with purple highlights, reflecting fine concentration.

Nose

The nose opens on intense aromas of crushed black fruits, notably blackberries, blueberries, and blackcurrant. Mineral notes mingle with hints of licorice, cedar, and sweet spices. Aeration reveals nuances of toasted wood and vanilla from aging in new barrels.

Palate

On the palate, the attack is straightforward and powerful. The texture impresses with its velvety feel and generosity, carried by coated tannins that coat the palate. The mid-palate shows a fine concentration of ripe black fruit, while the finish lingers at length on juicy notes of blackcurrant and blackberry, underlined by a persistent mineral freshness.

Food and wine pairings

Château Calon Ségur 2003 is an ideal match for grilled or roasted red meats, such as a rack of lamb with seasonal vegetables or a rib steak. It also pairs beautifully with duck dishes, notably duck breast with porcini mushrooms or confit. Aged hard cheeses, such as Comté or Ossau-Iraty, also make excellent pairings.

Serving and cellaring

Château Calon Ségur 2003 can be enjoyed now and will continue to evolve until around 2035. Decanting for one hour helps fully reveal its aromatic complexity. Serve at a temperature of 16-18°C.

A powerful and elegant Saint-Estèphe

The estate

Founded in 1824 and located in Saint-Estèphe (Gironde), Bordeaux, Château Calon Ségur spans 94 hectares, including 55 hectares of vines on gravelly, rolling rises. A Third Growth in the 1855 classification, it has cultivated a unique identity inherited from the famous motto of the Marquis de Ségur, “my heart is in Calon,” still featured on the label. The current owner is Suravenir Assurances (Crédit Mutuel Arkéa), which has undertaken, since 2012, a technical transformation aimed at greater consistency in quality.

The vineyard

The vineyard of Château Calon Ségur lies at the northern end of the Saint-Estèphe appellation, on the left bank of the Gironde estuary. The 55 hectares of vines are rooted in a terroir of deep gravels over a clay subsoil of Tertiary origin. This distinctive geological composition gives the wines powerful tannic structure and remarkable aging potential. The vineyard is surrounded by a historic stone wall built under the Marquis de Ségur, a rare feature in the Médoc.

The vintage

The 2003 vintage stands out for its exceptional, extreme weather conditions. The year was marked by a historic heatwave, with more than 50 days of temperatures exceeding 30°C during the growing season. The early and exceptionally warm spring accelerated vine development. The torrid, dry summer concentrated the berries, while welcome rainfall in September helped refine ripening. Harvest began on September 8 and became widespread from September 15, delivering healthy grapes of remarkable ripeness.

Winemaking and aging

The 2003 Château Calon Ségur harvest was carried out by hand, with rigorous grape selection. After sorting on a table, vinification took place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, with a three-day cold pre-fermentation maceration. Total vatting time lasted between 18 and 21 days depending on the lots. Aging was carried out for 18 to 20 months in 100% new oak barrels. The wine was fined with egg white prior to bottling.

Grape varieties

Cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet franc, and petit verdot.
