Vinum

Herb-spiced with a distinct smoky note, cool fireplace, cassis, blackberries, a hint of vanilla, cola herb; on the palate fresh, juicy, delicate fruit, pronounced tannins, plenty of energy and tension; a finish of very good length, spicy and red-fruited. A pleasantly elegant Calon Ségur that showcases its terroir beautifully.

Decanter

Super ripe, concentrated aromas on the nose. Plums, cassis, cherries with vanilla and some cinnamon as well as floral scents. Sleek and straight, the signature chalkiness straight away with bright, almost high-toned cranberry fruit. It’s not so wide or broad but really well defined and tapers with liquorice and cola accents on the finish. Feels well made, great tannin finesse, some chewy fruit and a feeling of coolness. 3.60 pH. A yield of 45 hl/ha. 100% new oak.

Quite floral in its nature, the wine quickly reveals its core of cherries and currants in the aromatic profile. Juicy, fresh, and energetic, the wine is medium-bodied, with a bright center of sweet, vibrant, red fruits and black currants on the mid-palate, leading to a mint-accented, soft, lifted finish. The wine blends 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot. 13.1% ABV, 3.6 pH. Yields were 45 hectoliters per hectare. The harvest took place September 23 - October 9. You only need to give it 2 years or so of patience, and it will be a beauty to drink for at least 2 decades with ease. Drink from 2029-2055. 93-95 Pts

Beautiful ruby-red expression. A slimmer, more finessed expression of Calon than in recent years, giving it less of the estate signature than some, but it shows beautiful cassis bud, rose petals, peony, iris, cocoa bean and graphite. Subtle, but with real charm. 3.60 pH. 45 hl/ha. 100% new oak. Vincent Millet, director. Harvest from 23 September to 9 October.

Inky black colour. An intense, refined, pure nose, fruity and silky, evolving in the glass towards floral, liquorice and smoky notes. A magnificent attack on the palate, full-bodied, juicy and silky, then the wine melts away, noble as it unfolds into a great, sapid length, delicately perfumed by a subtle woody base. It’s impossible to spit out! Calon Segur is sailing ever more often close to 90% Cabernet. Unthinkable just a few years ago! Blend: 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot. Alcohol: 13.1% - pH: 3.6. Yield: 45 hl/ha.

Description

The structure and aromatic framework of a Saint-Estèphe wine

The property

Calon was the name given to the boat used in the Middle Ages to transport wood from one bank to the other of the Garonne. And at the beginning of the 18th century, the Marquis de Ségur, who received the estate as a wedding gift, added his name to it, thus giving birth to the label of this 3rd grand cru classé of Saint-Estèphe.

The Château Calon Ségur remained in the Capbern-Gasqueton family throughout the 19th century, until 2012, when the property was bought by Suravenir Assurances, which continues to produce wines with an inimitable style marked by the seal of the appellation.

Château Calon Ségur has also become famous with its label adorning the bottles of the property. Since the 18th century, the heart has indeed been the symbol of the property and pays tribute to this phrase of the Marquis de Ségur: "I make wine at Lafite and Latour but my heart is at Calon". For nearly three centuries, lovers of Château Calon Ségur continue to remain loyal to this iconic property of the appellation.

The vineyard

Château Calon Ségur comes from a vineyard covering an area of 55 hectares, 48 hectares of which are in production. Planted on a thick layer of Garonne gravels dating from the Quaternary period with a thin layer of lacustrine clay on top, the 20-year-old vines on average give birth to a great Saint-Estèphe wine.

The vintage

The winter of 2023-2024 was mild and rainy. The flowering, in June, took place in dry and temperate weather. The summer, slightly cool and not very deficient in water, allowed a serene growth of the vine. In September, sustained rains and cool temperatures required increased vigilance, but the clay soils favored good maturation.

Vinification and aging

Manual harvest before a first control of the grape on the vine. Vibrating destemmer and manual sorting table. Maceration for 20 days. Micro-oxygenation. The aging lasts for 20 months in new barrels.

Blend

This Château Calon Ségur 2024 is the result of a blend of cabernet sauvignon (82%), merlot (9%), cabernet franc (8%) and petit verdot (1%).
