Château Doisy-Védrines 2012

One of the few sweet wines of this vintage that can also age a bit, even though it will taste good young: interesting elderflower aromatics, great finesse and freshness, just the right concentration, a refreshing herbal‑tea finish.

An unctuous style, with toasted almond and hazelnut notes coating the core of glazed peach, warm piecrust and creamed yellow apple. Shows a fresh lemon meringue edge on the finish, though that should give way to a more tropical and toasty side as this ages. Drink now through 2027. 2,500 cases made.

Vibrant sweet wine with freshness and lift. This medium-bodied Barsac has good intensity and mid-palate weight with 135 g/l residual sugar. It is not a blockbuster, but there is freshness here with lifted floral notes. Yields were low – 10 hl/ha; about 30,000 bottles will be made this year.

A blend of 82% Semillon and 18% Sauvignon Blanc, the 2012 Doisy-Vedrines has 136 g/L of residual sugar. It has a pale to medium straw-gold color and notes of lemon drops, poached pears, and apple butter slowly emerge from the glass, yielding to fragrant wafts of lime leaves, fresh ginger, and saffron. The palate delivers impactful sweetness, with seamless acidity to balance and loads of savory and citrus fruit accents, finishing on a soft-spoken mineral note.

Rich for a second wine, nicely toasty but less complex in aromatic detail than the grand vin.

The pineapple aromas of Doisy-Védrines are charming, the wine is medium-bodied, the finish shows cut hay and above all resin notes, and the whole is very well balanced.

Smoky, floral aromas are immediately enticing. They follow through to a wine that is rich and dry rather than obviously sweet. It has great swathes of botrytis and acidity, accompanied by yellow fruits and ripe citrus. Drink this structured wine from 2020.
