Château La Dominique 2016 : a structured Saint-Émilion

Château La Dominique is a Grand Cru Classé of the Saint-Émilion appellation. The 35-year-old vineyard of 23 hectares is planted on soils made of old sand upon clay and clay brown soils. The ageing of the wine is carried out for 16 months, in 60% new oak. The La Dominique 2016 blend is composed of 80% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Deep red in colour, Château La Dominique 2016 reveals an intense nose with aromas of black berries (mulberry) and small red berries, combined with mineral notes (oyster shells), due to the terroir of the property. This wine offers fairly bold tannins, all fresh and spicy. The finish of the Château La Dominique 2016 presents a great structure and reveals a beautiful salinity.

Wine Advocate-Parker :
The 2016 La Dominique was tasted on several occasions. Deep in color, it has a blackberry and bilberry-scented bouquet, a touch of oyster shell developing in the glass. There is intensity here, but it is tightly coiled. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin, showing more freshness at the Rolland Laboratory tasting than elsewhere, a dash of spice with a structured, saline finish. This was more promising than recent vintages that I have tasted and hopefully augurs for what is in bottle. There was some variation here, hence the question mark against my banded score.
