Decanter

Nuanced nose of black fruits and perfume, very pretty and appealing. Round and unctuous on the palate, but not so big or bold, more refined and stylish. Very charming with the perfume really evident on the palate, so floral which I really like. The fruit has energy and this is nicely chewy with good acidity. Everything in balance just lightly presented. It's calm but confident not trying too hard with some really appealing aspects.

The wine opens with espresso, cocoa, spice, and plummy notes on the nose. The palate is vibrant, medium-bodied, and energetic, leaving you with a blend of red cherries, plums, chocolate, licorice, and oranges. Drink from 2024–2039.

Yves Beck

The interplay between freshness, vegetal notes, minerality, and fruit enhances and reinforces the bouquet’s complexity. La Pointe is defined by its vigor and linear character. The tannins are tight, perfectly integrated, and aligned with the wine’s acidity. The wine shows tension and sapid depth. A wine built on balance, harmony, and freshness. A fine success, not only in the context of the vintage but also in stylistic terms. A true marathoner, and it would have been foolish to make it do weightlifting. Eric Monneret and his team have made highly judicious choices!

Terre de Vins

Wild blackberry, a hint of stem, bramble note, camphor and cedar. The nose is a very 2021 patchwork. The palate is free-flowing, with a certain roundness, framed by well-integrated oak and a firm yet contained tannic structure. A tangy through-line concludes the wine, marked by lovely overall balance, on the crunchy side.

An attractive, easy-going and well-delivered Pomerol. Before the recent improvements at La Pointe, it might have struggled to keep appellation character in this kind of vintage, meaning that here you have real proof of how far they have come over the past decade. The fruit delivers sweet raspberry purée, red cherry, touches of redcurrant, grilled campfire smoke, fennel, orange peel, fresh acidities that translate into a juicy finish that keeps you engaged. Hubert de Boüard consultant, Pierre Candelier technical director.

Description

A red wine from Pomerol from a demanding vintage

The property

The vineyard of Château La Pointe extends over 23 hectares planted on a mosaic of gravel and pebble soils, clay-gravel, sandy on clays or gravels, giving the wines of the property a singular and delicate style. Accompanied by Hubert de Boüard de Laforest, co-owner of Château Angélus, the property's team has been carrying out significant work since 2008 to evolve cultural practices in order to best express the potential of this reference of the Pomerol appellation.

The vineyard

This Pomerol wine comes from a 23-hectare vineyard.

The vintage

With its unpredictable weather conditions, 2021 brought a lot of stress and worry to the property's teams, who were keen to find the balance between cultural necessities and environmental commitments. It required total dedication from the winegrowers, even on weekends, to bring to fruition a harvest that was predicted to be low from the beginning of the summer, following a significant episode of coulure.

A late vintage that contrasts with the previous very sunny ones, 2021 required patience to reach maturity. The harvest thus began on September 27 with the merlot and extended until October 13 for the harvest of the last cabernet francs.

Vinification and aging

After a rigorous selection in the vineyard and then in the cellar to ensure a mature and homogeneous maturity, the whole challenge of the vinification of this vintage lay in the balance to be found to favor gentle extractions allowing to reveal the finesse of the tannins and the elegance of the aromatic bouquet.

Blend

Merlot (82%) and cabernet franc (18%).
