Wine Spectator

James Molesworth

Bright and open, with cherry, raspberry and floral notes backed by a hint of red licorice. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2025. 6,833 cases made.

Decanter

Now owned by the team at Labegorce and Marquis d'Alesme, and it's an enjoyable vintage with evident juice and grip running through the palate. Always a good value Margaux, which opens to show creamy blackberry texture and traces of violet florality.

James Suckling

A pretty nose of blueberries, cherries, dried leaves, truffles and baking spices. Medium-bodied with fine tannins. Velvety, with rich cherry notes and a fleshy, polished and flavorful finish. Drink from 2024.

The 2019 La Tour de Mons spans two terms of ownership. It was sold in February 2020 to the Perroudot family (owners of Labégorce and Marquis d’Alesme), so the current team finished the aging. The 2019 has an expressive bouquet of lively blackberry and raspberry fruit, with some attractive orange pith notes emerging over time. The palate is well balanced, with fleshy ripe red fruit, white pepper and graphite. Nicely balanced and gentle, leading to a precise, quite Pauillac-like finish. Lovely.

Flowers, earth, sweet cherries and tobacco wrapper scents introduce the wine. On the palate, the wine is fresh, medium-bodied, forward and already delivering its savory-edged, earthy, fresh, chewy, dark red fruits with a cedar and pepper accent. Give it just a year or two and it will be fully ready to go. Drink from 2024-2036.

Dark ruby, purple reflections, subtle brightening on the rim. On the nose, red cherries, fresh berry confit, a tobacco savouriness and leafy nuances. Light-footed and somewhat loosely knit, with a subtle vegetal touch and salty-lemony notes, but unfortunately quite a short finish.

The 2019 Château La Tour De Mons is solid, with medium-bodied aromas and flavors of savory red fruits, leather, dried herbs, and chalky minerality. Balanced, with building tannins and outstanding length, it's going to drink well for 15 years.

The Wine Independent

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

Made from 47% Merlot, 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, the 2019 La Tour de Mons is deep garnet-purple colored. It sings of redcurrants, black cherries, and mulberries with hints of tobacco and crushed stones. Medium-bodied, it is bright, refreshing, and breezy with soft tannins and a savory finish.

Jean-Marc Quarin

Dark color, slightly evolved. Fruity nose, but moderately intense. From this vintage onward, the palate of La Tour de Mons becomes more refined, even if the body remains medium. This change is due to the new owner (Famille Perrodo), who took charge of the élevage here, but not the vineyard work or the winemaking. 2019 is a transitional vintage. Pleasant result.

92–94. Barrel Sample. While this wine is powerful and structured, it still manages to tick the boxes of stylish Margaux. The ripe black currant jelly fruits are balanced by the wine's impressive acidity and structure. This is a fine wine for long-term aging.

Description

A great red wine from Margaux

The property
With origins dating back to the 13th century, the Château La Tour de Mons is one of the oldest wine estates in Margaux. Classified as Cru Bourgeois Supérieur, Château La Tour de Mons underwent significant renovation work during the 1990s. Managed by CA Grands Crus since 2012 and under the direction of Anne Le Naour, technical director of the property, Château La Tour de Mons produces wines that reflect the typicity and authenticity of the Margaux appellation on the left bank of Bordeaux.

The vineyard
In one piece, the 48 hectares of vines of Château La Tour de Mons extend over Garonne gravels and clay-limestone soils in the heart of the AOC Margaux.

The vintage
Favorable to a great vintage, the weather conditions of this 2019 year were contrasted. A serene start to the cycle and very favorable summer conditions were followed by light rains in September perfecting the maturity of the berries.

Vinification and aging
Aging in barrels (30% new).

Blend
Merlot (47%), cabernet sauvignon (46%), cabernet franc (5%), petit verdot (2%).
