A red wine from Pessac-Léognan, with a predominance of Cabernet Franc, from an urban vineyard in Bordeaux
The estate
The history of Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion begins in 1584, when Jean de Pontac donated a mill, meadows and vines to the Grands Carmes of Bordeaux. Renamed Carmes-Haut-Brion in 1840 by the merchant Léon Colin, this Pessac-Léognan cru is the only Bordeaux château whose postal address lies within the city of Bordeaux. Owned since late 2010 by the Pichet property group, led by Patrice Pichet, it is managed by Guillaume Pouthier as operations director. It stands out for the prominence of Cabernet Franc and for a winery designed by Philippe Starck.
The vineyard
This Pessac-Léognan wine comes from the historic heart of the estate, a walled vineyard in the middle of an urban area, at the junction of Bordeaux, Pessac and Mérignac. The Peugue river runs through the property and contributes to the natural drainage of the soils. These combine Mindel gravels, sands and clays, over a clay-limestone subsoil. The soils are worked by horse.
The vintage
The 2015 vintage began with a rainy, then cold winter. A warm, dry spring followed, succeeded by a warm, dry summer. The dry end of the season allowed the red grape varieties to reach optimal ripeness.
Winemaking and ageing
For Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion 2015, the winemaking is carried out without crushing, with a significant proportion of whole bunches. The gravity-fed winery limits handling. The vats are made of truncated stainless steel, concrete or wood. Ageing takes place largely in new oak barrels.
Grape varieties
The blend is dominated by Cabernet Franc, together with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
