The hidden treasures

A jewel of the appellation that bears its name, Château Margaux leaves no one indifferent. Instantly recognizable by its building, an architectural masterpiece in neo-Palladian style, Château Margaux is one of the rare estates to have been crowned as a “Premier Cru Classé” at the official classification of 1855. Drawing on centuries of expertise, this prestigious estate is exceptionally opening the doors of its cellar to Millésima to let you discover the many treasures within. 1964, 1975, 1982 and many other vintages are now available in extremely limited quantities.

The history of Château Margaux

Five centuries of history lie behind this legendary estate! It’s difficult to sum up in a few lines the long story of Château Margaux, but the first major turning point came in the 16th century, when the estate was truly restructured over ten years by the de Lestonnac family. The second revolution would come in 1801, when the Marquis de Colonilla, Bertrand Douat, purchased the property and built the château we know today. Often nicknamed the “Versailles of the Médoc”, the building is directly inspired by the neo-Palladian style! Many owners followed until 1977, when the estate was acquired by André Mentzelopoulos, who began a major transformation of Château Margaux. A visionary, the businessman invested heavily and achieved true feats, whether in the château, in the cellars or in the vineyards. He restored the estate’s prestige, ensuring that Château Margaux wines once again rank among the world’s greatest. Today, his daughter, Corinne Mentzelopoulos, continues the family legacy, bringing all her passion and energy to perpetuate the magnificent work begun by her father.

Pavillon Rouge
from Château Margaux

The quality of Pavillon Rouge has become much closer to that of the first wine, as the plots that make it up were, not so long ago, all part of the blend for Château Margaux. Of course, it does not have the same complexity, depth or “magic”, but the aromas are similar and the balance on the palate comes from the same subtle blend of power and softness. It is generally ready to drink a little earlier, while having excellent aging potential well beyond 30 or 40 years.

Pavillon Blanc
from Château Margaux

Sold in the 19th century under the name “Château Margaux vin de sauvignon”, this white wine from the estate has been known as “Pavillon Blanc du Château Margaux” since 1920, and the label has not changed since then. The eleven-hectare vineyard is planted exclusively with Sauvignon Blanc. It is located on a very old plot of the estate which had for a long time been planted with red vines, then uprooted due to the high risk of spring frosts. Production and selection techniques have been completely revised since 2009/2010 to achieve a higher level of excellence; only one third of the crop is bottled, while the remaining two thirds are sold in bulk. The quantity of Pavillon Blanc now does not exceed a thousand cases.

Trilogy Case
from Château Margaux

The limited edition “Château Margaux - La trilogie 2019” brings together three exceptional wines in a wooden box with a refined design. The 2019 vintage, marked by extreme heat, benefited from balanced maturity thanks to a rainy period that produced grapes with a good acid-alcohol balance.
