Wine Spectator

James Molesworth

Shows solid, juicy black cherry and blackberry fruit flavors at the core, with a mix of apple wood and savory notes in the background. There's a racy, chalk edge to the finish despite an obvious toast treatment. A very solid effort for the vintage. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2025 through 2037.

Decanter

Fragrant dark bramble fruit on the nose, really aromatic and open. Supple and agile, this has a really nice weight in the mouth, not fleshy but there’s a certain plumpness to the texture with lifted acidity and very clear minerality on the tongue – lots of slate and liquorice, dark chocolate and tobacco. The wood is definitely on show, but once this integrates more it will be a lovely wine. I like the weight, a good example for 2021. Last vintage. Now integrated into Pavie 2022.

This is so perfumed and pretty, with red currants, flowers, cassis and hints of sandalwood. Medium-bodied with fine tannins and a lovely finish. Give it a couple of years. This is the last vintage of PD, as it’s now part of Chateau Pavie. Small production. Drink after 2027.

The 2021 Pavie-Decesse is the final vintage that will be produced, as the two hectares will be blended into Pavie (along with Bellevue-Mondotte). This has fine delineation on the nose with predominantly black fruit, melted tar, dark chocolate and light mocha scents. The chocolate element actually becomes more pronounced with further aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sapid black fruit, quite mineral-driven and well-balanced with black pepper and clove toward the finish. It's a very decent way to bow out in a tricky vintage.

Chocolate, black cherries, smoke, licorice, flowers, and cinnamon nuances come together to create the perfume. On the palate, the wine is equally vibrant and creamy, with a finish that leaves chalky textures, peppery notes, black cherries, blackberries, espresso, and dark chocolate with a salty aftertaste. Give this a year or two in the cellar before pulling a cork. The wine blends 88% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Franc. This is the final vintage for Pave-Decesse as the vines became part of Chateau Pavie the following year. Drink from 2025–2045.

Falstaff

Falstaff

Deep ruby core, purple reflections, broad bright rim. An inviting bouquet of fresh plums, a touch of black cherries and lively orange zest. Juicy, sweet red wild berries, fine tannins, fresh with a well-integrated minerality. Already drinking well and has very good potential for ageing.

One of the few real “wow” wines of the vintage, the 2021 Château Pavie Decesse shows a dense purple/ruby hue along with gorgeous black raspberry and cassis supported by a classic sense of minerality, spicy wood, violets, and truffle. This outright mineral bomb is medium to full-bodied, with a silky, layered mouthfeel, a touch of salinity, and outstanding length. Based on 88% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Franc, aged in 80% new oak, and clocking in at 14.9% alcohol (pH 3.87), enjoy this absolutely gorgeous 2021 over the next 15–20 years.

Curling tobacco and saffran spice, edges of bitter chocolate, tannins are already supple, supporting savoury blueberry fruit. Beautiful density and weight, clear grip and lift, subtle complexity, can easily open in three or four years, and expect any remaining bottles to last 15 to 20 years. Thoroughly enjoyable. 33.6hl/h yield. This is the last vintage of Pavie Decesse, so this is the time to buy it if you are a fan.

The Wine Independent

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

2021 is the last vintage of Pavie Decesse, as it will be folded into Pavie from this vintage onward. It has a deep garnet-purple color and sashays out with perfumed notes of candied violets, dark chocolate, Morello cherries, and fragrant earth, plus nuances of licorice and black truffles. The medium-bodied palate is an exercise in elegance, featuring tightly wound layers of red fruit and floral notes, bound by very fine-grained tannins and great tension, finishing long and graceful. Stunning!

This is the final vintage of Pavie Decesse, which will be integrated into Château Pavie in the future! The bouquet is inviting and pleasant. Beautiful purity of fruit with aromas of blackberry and elderberry, complemented by sweet spices. The attack is suave and more streamlined than usual. The wine has pep, tension, and tannins that certainly have grip, but above all the substance needed to create good synergy with the acidic structure. A wine that only confirms its aptitude to integrate into Château Pavie.

Vinum

Juicy, with good length, polished tannins, a lovely cushion of oak.

Le Figaro Vin

A piercing, catchy nose with aromas of black fruits, interwoven with notes of blackcurrant leaf and a touch of aromatic herbs. The wine has an immediately soothing effect on the palate—poised, caressing—with lovely length and freshness, and graphite notes that glide into a saline fluidity on the finish.
