Description

Characteristics and tasting tips for Château Smith Haut Lafitte 2023

Tasting

Nose
The nose is particularly expressive, revealing aromas of red and black fruits such as morello cherry, blueberry and blackcurrant. After aeration, spicy notes of clove, liquorice and eucalyptus emerge, followed by darker and smoky nuances such as graphite and pencil lead. This aromatic complexity is typical of the prestigious Graves soils.

Palate
On the palate, the attack is sharp and direct, offering a beautiful density and a remarkable texture. The wine is full and dense, with a harmonious balance of freshness. The tannic structure is well present and ripe, offering a silky and velvety texture. The aromas on the palate recall those perceived on the nose, with a complexity of red and black fruits, spices and touches of tobacco leaves and eucalyptus. The notes of graphite, emblematic of Smith Haut Lafitte wines, are also present. This vintage stands out for its power and elegance, with a refined tannic structure.

A well-balanced and fresh Pessac-Léognan red wine

The estate

Located in the heart of the Pessac-Léognan appellation and dating back to 1365, the Château Smith Haut Lafitte is one of the oldest châteaux in Bordeaux. This magnificent estate entered a new era of its history following its purchase by Daniel and Florence Cathiard in 1990. Driven with passion and ambition by the Cathiard couple, Château Smith Haut Laffite has risen to the rank of the most beautiful properties in Graves with crus worldwide renowned for their elegance and style, both in red and white.

The vineyard

This Château Smith Haut Laffite 2023 is a Pessac-Léognan wine from a 78-hectare vineyard with vines averaging 49 years old. The château uses its own vine plants thanks to a mother vine preserved in the nursery on Lalande Island.

Vinification and ageing

Vinification in small wooden vats. Gentle extraction by regular punch-downs. Ageing for 18 months in barrels (60% new) from the cooperage integrated into the château.

Blend

Cabernet Sauvignon (70%)
Merlot (23%)
Cabernet Franc (6%)
Petit Verdot (1%).
