The 2019 Riesling Schlossberg Grand Cru is picked in a parcel of pure granite called Im Tal, sheltered and slightly shaded in the morning, so the fruit does not show dry stress and takes a while to mature. A lifted sense of dried lime and lemon peel with an edge of herbal tincture is beginning to evolve. The palate is completely strait-laced and direct but with a gentle, smooth flow, like cold water gushing at high altitudes. The slender body is mellowed by that herbal tincture vibe, almost lending an edge of balm to this direct, stony, slender wine. Its 6g/L of residual sweetness disappears. Tenderly lasting. (Dry)

The bouquet of this Schlossberg is intense and complex. It shows minerality, notes of anise and white pepper, along with hints of nectarine. Saline and immediately appealing on the attack, the wine is juicy and lively. With good aromatic intensity, it carries this through with a lingering finish. A savoury, subtle wine that certainly hasn’t revealed its full potential yet! One to watch.

The estate

The Bott Geyl estate, located in Beblenheim in Alsace, is recognized for its commitment to organic and biodynamic farming. The property makes it a point of honor to respect the specificities of the Alsatian terroirs, cultivating its plots according to sustainable and environmentally friendly practices. The crémants and wines of the Bott Geyl estate reflect this demand for quality, combining purity and finesse, to best express the potential of the region's soils.

The vineyard

The vineyard extends over the commune of Kientzheim in Alsace, in the heart of an exceptional terroir. Planted on a small plot of 0.80 hectare, the vines, aged 25 to 55 years, make the most of the granitic arenas that make up the soil. This substrate promotes a brilliant minerality and a beautiful tension in the wines. The south to south-west exposure, combined with a marked slope of 30 to 45%, guarantees optimal sunshine allowing the grapes to reach perfect maturity.

Vinification and aging

The manual harvest, with meticulous sorting and transport in 40 kg crates, precedes a slow pressing of the whole grapes. After a static decantation of 24 hours, the alcoholic fermentation, carried out by indigenous yeasts takes place at controlled temperature. Aged on fine lees until September, the wine is only lightly filtered before bottling.
