Decanter

Bruno’s father, Bernard, made a Cuvée des Vieilles Murées at Domaine Clair-Daü; Bruno has revived the tradition. The vines for this were planted between 1920 and 1924 in the lieu-dit Les Longeroies at the northern end of the village. Out of the barrel, the wine shows an inky dark colour, ripe, plummy fruit, and abundant flesh and structure. Impressive for the vintage, a lively acidity carries it to a marvellously lingering finish. Again, superb.

Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of the Marsannay 2022 Domaine Bruno Clair

Tasting notes

Colour
A deep ruby red colour appears in the glass.

Nose
The nose reveals an aromatic bouquet centred on red fruits such as strawberry, raspberry and cherry, delicately underlined by notes of liquorice and subtle touches of aromatic herbs.

Palate
The palate offers a full-bodied texture perfectly balanced by a lovely freshness. Aromas of cherry and pepper unfold with elegance through to a long, austere finish marked by a fine minerality.

Food and wine pairing

This red wine pairs wonderfully with roast duck, coq au vin or lamb stew. It will also go beautifully with white meats such as veal or poultry, mushroom-based dishes or roasted root vegetables, as well as a board of matured cheeses.

Service and storage

This Marsannay 2022 can be enjoyed now, but it will continue to develop its complexity and can be cellared until around 2029.

Other characteristics

This wine has a moderate alcohol content of around 13%.

The purity and elegance of a Marsannay red wine

The estate

Founded in 1979 by Bruno Clair, Domaine Bruno Clair is a key name in Burgundy. Located in Marsannay-la-Côte, the estate now spans 27 hectares across eight prestigious villages. Still at the helm of the estate, Bruno Clair is now supported by his wife Isabelle and their children, Edouard, Arthur and Margaux. Renowned for its environmentally friendly approach and its work with old vines, the estate produces wines that express the full richness of their terroirs with great purity and elegance.

The vineyard

The grapes for this Marsannay come from several plots within the appellation. The vines grow at an average altitude of 280 metres on clay-limestone soils with a south-east exposure. The estate favours sustainable, organic viticulture, with no chemical herbicides used since the 1990s. The soils are nourished with organic fertilisers and protected by cover crops, while Guyot-Poussard pruning is practised to ensure the longevity of the vines.

The vintage

The year 2022 began with a mild winter followed by early budbreak in late March. After a cold April, the warmth and dry weather in May allowed for rapid flowering. June brought welcome rainfall, offsetting the drought, ahead of a particularly sunny July. Despite historically hot summer temperatures, the absence of extreme heat spikes protected the vineyard. Harvest began in August, yielding grapes in exceptional health.

Winemaking and aging

The winemaking process for this Marsannay 2022 includes 10 to 20% whole clusters. A maceration of 10 to 15 days takes place in wooden vats. The wine is then aged for 18 to 20 months in oak barrels, around 20% of which are new, helping to preserve the mineral expression of the terroir.
