Decanter

This impressive wine is everything that one expects from Bonnes-Mares: deep, dark black plum and mulberry fruit with hints of mineral, smoke, and ground coffee; a fleshy, dense texture, abundant tannic grip, and impressive length. The grapes come from the domaine's 1.64 hectares of Bonnes-Mares, mostly in Morey-St-Denis, where the wines are known for power. This parcel is the earliest ripening of Clair's vineyards, with vines planted in 1945, 1967, and 1980. Give this five to 10 years before opening, and then enjoy over the next 20.

La RVF

An extra dose of freshness in the Bonnes-Mares, with aromas combining violet, tonka bean and blackberry. Quite creamy, perfectly judged in its élevage yet still firm on its tannins on the finish, this extroverted wine, built around a very firm, sappy core, is destined for long aging.

Le Figaro Vin

A discreet bouquet at first, as if you had to retune your nose to breathe the rarefied air of high altitudes, even of paradise. Then the aromas begin to leap from the glass, like an overflowing picnic basket of fruit, charcuterie, jams and aromatic herbs. Rich and broad on the palate, with flavors deeply rooted in the earth, the wine unfolds across the palate. It leaves its mark with a long, savory finish, full of chew.

Description

Characteristics and tasting notes for the 2022 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru from Domaine Bruno Clair

Tasting

Colour
This Vin de France reveals a deep ruby hue, enhanced by delicate garnet highlights that reflect its beautiful concentration.

Nose
Wonderfully complex, the aromatic bouquet opens with notes of black fruits such as blackberry, paired with violet. It then evolves towards touches of tonka bean, gentle spices and a perfectly integrated oakiness that never masks the vibrancy of the fruit.

Palate
Combining the characteristic power of Morey-Saint-Denis with the elegance of Chambolle-Musigny, the palate offers a dense, fleshy texture. The tannins, remarkably fine, support flavours of plum jam, liquorice, dark chocolate and sandalwood. Subtle notes of chalk, oriental spices and a slight smoky touch extend the tasting towards a finish of remarkable persistence.

Food and wine pairing

This cuvée pairs wonderfully with flavourful meats such as jugged hare, beef fillet, or duck in a rich sauce. It will also enhance scallops served with a robust reduction, as well as raw-milk cheeses matured to develop smoky notes.

Service and storage

To fully appreciate this Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2022, it is recommended to decant it for a long time, from two hours to several hours before serving, and to enjoy it at a temperature between 16 and 17°C. Built to last, this wine can be cellared until 2032 before it begins to open up, reaching its peak between approximately 2036 and 2046, with an ageing potential extending well beyond 2052.

The masterful expression of a great Burgundy terroir

The estate

Founded in 1979 by Bruno Clair, Domaine Bruno Clair is a key reference in Burgundy. Located in Marsannay-la-Côte, the estate now spans twenty-seven hectares across eight prestigious villages. Heir to a long family tradition, the domaine is currently run by Bruno Clair, his wife Isabelle, and their children Édouard, Margaux and Arthur. Deeply committed to the authentic expression of its terroirs, the family favours sustainable viticulture, the historic massale selection of its vines and a respectful approach to the soil, giving rise to wines of great purity.

The vineyard

Bonnes-Mares is a prestigious appellation located on the border of Chambolle-Musigny and Morey-Saint-Denis. The estate's plot, facing south-east at an altitude ranging between 250 and 280 metres, rests on white marl soils and clay-limestone earth atop a bedrock of Jurassic limestone. This exceptional terroir is home to vines planted in several stages since 1946, carefully cultivated using the Guyot-Poussard pruning method, natural grass cover and a total absence of herbicides to preserve the vitality of the soils.

The vintage

2022 was marked by demanding weather conditions throughout the growing season. Nevertheless, the resilience of the vines and particularly favourable harvest conditions made it possible to pick grapes of remarkable quality, offering great freshness and ideal aromatic precision.

Winemaking and ageing

The vinification of the Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2022 begins with fermentation in open wooden vats using indigenous yeasts, incorporating a proportion of 20 to 50% whole clusters. Extraction is carried out gently to respect the identity of the terroir. The wine is then aged for twenty-four months in French oak barrels, of which 20 to 50% is new wood, resting on its fine lees without any stirring before bottling.
