Description
Characteristics and Tasting Tips for the Gevrey-Chambertin Village "Vieilles Vignes" 2023 from Domaine Faiveley
Tasting notes
Colour
The colour is a deep, brilliant ruby with limpid highlights.
Nose
The nose opens on notes of black and red fruits (black cherry, blackberry, blackcurrant, strawberry, redcurrant), accompanied by floral nuances of violet and rose, as well as spicy touches of liquorice and pepper, complemented by hints of damp earth, forest floor and a mineral note.
Palate
The palate is full, juicy and silky, carried by ripe, compact tannins and supported by a lively, well-integrated acidity. The whole extends into a long, fresh and persistent finish marked by pronounced minerality.
Food and wine pairing
This wine of character is an ideal match for slow-braised meats, such as beef bourguignon or veal and lamb stews, as well as roasted meats such as duck breast. It also pairs very well with a platter of mature cheeses.
Serving and cellaring
The Gevrey-Chambertin Village "Vieilles Vignes" 2023 is best enjoyed between 16 and 18°C, after a light decanting to fully reveal its aromas. A carafe can be useful to open it up while it is still youthful.
A Gevrey-Chambertin from Domaine Faiveley, Balancing Power and Finesse
The estate
Founded in 1825 in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Domaine Faiveley is today one of the largest family-owned estates in Burgundy, with more than 120 hectares spread across the Côte de Nuits, the Côte de Beaune and the Côte Chalonnaise. Led by the seventh generation, Erwan and Eve Faiveley, together with technical director Jérôme Flous, the estate combines Burgundian tradition with technical modernity, with a vineyard currently being converted to organic farming.
The vineyard
The Gevrey-Chambertin Village "Vieilles Vignes" comes from a meticulous selection of some twenty plots, totalling approximately 9.82 hectares, located around the village of Gevrey-Chambertin. Planted between 1945 and 1969, these vines have an average age of more than forty-five years. The terroir consists of iron-rich clay marls, with an east and south-east exposure, promoting even ripening of the grapes while preserving a lovely freshness.
The vintage
The 2023 vintage in Burgundy provided good ripening conditions for Pinot Noir.
Vinification and ageing
The Gevrey-Chambertin Village "Vieilles Vignes" 2023 comes from hand-harvested grapes with rigorous sorting. Vinification takes place in vats with daily punch-downs for approximately 19 days, followed by gravity-fed free-run juice drainage and slow pressing of the pomace. Ageing continues in French oak barrels for approximately 14 months, with 20 to 30% new oak, followed by two months in vat before bottling.
Grape variety
100% Pinot Noir.
