Description
Characteristics and tasting advice for the Mambourg Grand Cru 2022 from Domaine Marcel Deiss
Tasting
Appearance
The wine displays an intense yellow color with golden highlights.
Nose
The nose is powerful and concentrated, while retaining remarkable mineral elegance. It reveals aromas of ripe yellow fruits and dark citrus, accompanied by saline notes reminiscent of limestone. Hints of mocha and iodine complete this complex bouquet.
Palate
On the palate, this white wine is generous and concentrated, combining power and finesse. The texture is round and rich, supported by delicate tannins and lovely saline freshness. The long, intense finish delivers a crisp, mineral sensation with remarkable persistence.
Food and wine pairings
This Mambourg Grand Cru 2022 pairs perfectly with a zander fillet with beurre blanc, pan-seared langoustines, or an aged farmhouse Munster. It also matches well with an Alba white truffle risotto or poultry in sauce.
Serving and cellaring
The Mambourg Grand Cru 2022 can be enjoyed now and will continue to evolve until around 2050.
A powerful, mineral Grand Cru from Alsace, born of Mambourg’s limestone terroir
The estate
Founded in 1947 by Marcel Deiss, the Domaine Marcel Deiss now covers 26 hectares across nine Alsatian villages. Run since 1973 by Jean-Michel Deiss, joined by his son Mathieu, the estate is internationally renowned for its revolutionary philosophy rooted in co-planting and the expression of terroir. Certified in biodynamic farming since 1998, Domaine Marcel Deiss is among the most respected producers in Alsace, ranked in 2022 among France’s 50 best winemakers.
The vineyard
Mambourg is a very early-ripening limestone terroir overlooking the village of Sigolsheim. This Grand Cru of around 62 hectares benefits from a due south exposure between 210 and 350 meters above sea level. The soils, composed of Oligocene limestone, marl, granitic sand and magnesium-rich materials, give this Alsace wine a distinctive tannic power combined with a supple roundness. The estate’s parcel, planted in 1992 at high density (12,000 vines per hectare), is cultivated as a co-planting of all the Pinots: pinot gris, pinot blanc, pinot noir, pinot meunier and pinot beurot.
The vintage
The 2022 vintage was marked by warm conditions that encouraged optimal grape ripening. These climatic conditions produced generous, concentrated wines, while preserving the mineral freshness characteristic of Mambourg’s limestone terroir.
Winemaking and aging
The harvest is carried out by hand with selective picking. The grapes are pressed very slowly as whole clusters for twelve hours. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts. Mambourg Grand Cru 2022 is then aged for twelve months in used barrels before bottling.
Grape varieties
Co-planting of pinot gris, pinot blanc, pinot noir, pinot meunier and pinot beurot.
