Vinous

Anne Krebiehl, MW

The 2022 Riesling Muenchberg Grand Cru spent 14 months in stainless steel. The 60+-year-old vines grow on Triassic sandstone with some volcanic elements from nearby Ungersberg. The nose has a touch of pear, with an overtone of candied lime and melted stearin. The palate is concentrated and balanced, with freshness framing the flesh. This is smooth, tender, bright, clear-cut and precise. The 2022 is monolithic yet understated. Give it time. (Bone-dry)

Wine Spectator

Kristen Bieler

Generous, full-bodied and creamy, with prickly acidity keeping the vibrancy high from start to finish. Salted butter and toasted brioche hang over grapefruit, fennel, green plum and blanched almond, all shot through with piquant spices and pickled ginger. A talc-fine mineral thread weaves through, bringing precision and focus to the finish. Drink now through 2032. 150 cases imported.

Description

Tasting advice for the Riesling Grand Cru "Muenchberg" 2022 from Domaine Ostertag

Tasting

This wine, of rare elegance and exceptional length, seduces with its flesh both generous and subtle. Its balance in the mouth results from the perfect harmony between sandstone and volcanic sediments, offering a finish of remarkable finesse, endless and delicately saline, emblematic signature of the Muenchberg.

A complex and elegant Grand Cru from Alsace

The property

The Domaine Ostertag, a family property extending over 14.4 hectares, is mainly located around the village of Epfig. Under the direction of André Ostertag, this estate is recognized as an essential reference in Alsace, appreciated for the excellence and authenticity of its wines.

The wine

The name Muenchberg, which translates to "Monk's Mountain" in Alsatian, finds its origin in the 12th century, when the Cistercian monks of the Baumgarten abbey, located at the foot of the hillside, planted the first vines there.

The vineyard

The Muenchberg, an iconic Grand Cru from Alsace, shines with the richness of its unique terroir, mixing pink sandstone and volcanic sediments. Perched above Nothalten, in a preserved valley facing due south, it benefits from a privileged microclimate that gives its wines finesse and complexity. Its vines, aged 75 years, have been cultivated biodynamically since 1998 and stand out for their mass selection planted at high density.

Vinification and aging

The grapes are carefully pressed in whole clusters using a pneumatic press. The fermentation, initiated by indigenous yeasts, takes place spontaneously in stainless steel tanks, followed by aging on lees for 14 months.
