Yohan Castaing

Biodynamically farmed, the 2021 Minervois la Liviniere Clos d'Ora reveals a dense, powerful and dark bouquet of oak, spices, clove, vanilla pod and baked dark berries. Medium to full-bodied, compact, generously extracted and dense, it has a massive chassis of tannins and a structured mid-palate that segues into a long, lusty, spicy and cedar-inflected finish. While the skill of Gérard Bertrand and his team is evident, one might question whether this wine truly captures the essence of its terroir or leans toward showcasing winemaking prowess, resulting in a more demonstrative style.

A stunning Minervois, focused, vibrant and layered with aromas of blackberries, fig biscuits, black olives, roasted meat, Mediterranean herbs and warm spices. It’s full-bodied with fine tannins. Seductive texture and poise here, and so much balance on the palate, despite the solid frame of tannins shaping up the focused fruit with a lift of herbs and spices. Lively and in control, with a refined character and plenty of vibrancy on the long finish. Try after 2025.

Falstaff

Dark ruby, purple reflections, subtle ochre rim. Delicately floral black forest berry fruit, cranberry, ripe heart cherry, delicate hints of lavender, fresh orange zest, multi-faceted bouquet. Powerful, juicy, fine nougat, ripe cherry, mineral-salty core, ripe, delicately rustic tannins, chocolaty finish, very long-lasting, good balance, some tannin on the finish, still too young to drink, will benefit from bottle ageing.

Aged 12 months in French oak barrels, the 2021 Minervois La Livinière Clos D'Ora is a blend of Syrah, Grenache Noir, Mourvèdre, and Carignan. It displays a bouquet of fairly pronounced woody notes, intense fruit, tobacco, sweet spices, wild fruit compote, and a hint of black caramel, which settles on a smooth freshness and tight, melting tannins. Dense and full-bodied, it has a calm character and a slightly old-fashioned style but retains a pleasant lightness. Best decanted. Drink 2025-2032.

Wine Enthusiast

R.S.

If you're looking for premium wine from Languedoc, you've found it. The wine shines in multiple dimensions and opens with a perfumed nose of rhubarb, black cherry and enticing baking spice. Robust black fruit leads on the palate that is bolstered by velvety tannins that linger on the finish. Pair with steak and grilled meats.

Deep, clear garnet with purple highlights. The fruit is ripe yet remains crisp. Fresh black fruits, garrigue, a touch of limestone, subtle woodiness, with depth. On the palate, it is elegant, with fine tannins, taut, with beautiful length. With a little ageing, it will be even greater.

A Languedoc wine ranked among the best in the world

The estate

Gérard Bertrand now runs the world’s largest biodynamic wine estate, with more than 850 hectares Demeter-certified across seventeen properties in Languedoc-Roussillon. A former professional rugby player, he took over the family estate in 1987 at the age of twenty-two following the death of his father, Georges. Since then, he has transformed this once little-known region into a wine destination of international renown. Named World’s Best Winemaker by Drinks Business in 2023, Gérard Bertrand embodies a holistic approach to viticulture that integrates biodynamics, the art of living and respect for the terroir.

The vineyard

Clos d'Ora covers nine hectares enclosed by dry-stone walls in La Livinière, at the heart of the Minervois La Livinière appellation, at an altitude of 220 meters. The vineyard occupies an exceptional geological position on a fault line separating two distinct terroirs: the Bartonian and Lutetian formations. Soils of limestone, sandstone and marl create a mosaic of terroirs, allowing each grape variety to express itself according to its natural affinity. The vineyard is farmed exclusively biodynamically, with soil work carried out using mules, guided by intuition and a deep connection with nature. The preserved environment includes garrigue scrubland and protected forests, forming a sanctuary devoted to peace, love and harmony.

The vintage

The 2021 vintage in the Languedoc benefited from the region’s characteristic Mediterranean climate, with generous sunshine and warm days. Cool nights brought by altitude and breezes from the Montagne Noire helped preserve the grapes’ freshness and acidity, contributing to the wine’s remarkable balance.

Vinification and aging

Each grape variety in Clos d'Ora 2021 is vinified separately using methods tailored to its characteristics. Syrah is destemmed before vatting and vinification. Grenache and mourvèdre are destemmed and lightly crushed before being placed in temperature-controlled tanks, with very gentle macerations to limit tannin extraction. Carignan is vinified using whole clusters at a higher temperature to extract maximum aromatic character. Pump-overs are kept to a minimum and punch-downs are delicate to preserve the wine’s elegance. Fermentation and maceration take place in unlined, temperature-controlled prefabricated concrete vats. Aging continues in French oak barrels before the final blend, a true alchemy that structures and shapes the wine.
