A lover of fine wines, Marquis Mario Incisa della Rocchetta was seduced by the tasting of an Italian wine whose bouquet reminded him of an old Bordeaux wine. From then on, this aristocrat's ambition was to produce a Tuscan wine that could compete with the greatest names in Bordeaux.
Following his marriage in 1942 to Clarice della Gherardesca, Mario Incisa della Rocchetta moved to the Tyrrhenian coast in the beautiful Maremma region of Tuscany. A pioneer, Mario Incisa della Rocchetta created Tenuta San Guido between Grosseto and Livorno and decided to break with the traditional Tuscan sangiovese by planting Cabernet Sauvignon, which had never been done here. This variety, which reveals the aromatic expression sought by Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, is planted on a stony Tuscan terroir with many similarities to the typical gravelly soil of the Medoc.
Today, Marquis Nicolò Incisa della Rocchetta and his daughter Priscilla carry on the tradition of this estate, whose vineyards cover 75 hectares.
Passionate and visionary, Mario Incisa della Rocchetta gave birth to Sassicaia ("place of stones" in Italian), a wine that has become iconic and rivals the most prestigious wines in the world.
From 1948 to 1967, the production of Sassicaia was reserved for the family's private consumption, but Mario Incisa della Rocchetta realised that, over time, this wine developed evolving notes that gave it a structure and an aromatic palette of great finesse, guaranteeing exceptional quality and ageing potential.
Wishing to refine the quality of his wine, Mario was advised by his cousin Piero Antinori, a descendant of the illustrious wine merchant family, and by oenologist Giacomo Tachis. His quest for excellence includes diversification of the grape varieties, control of yields and changes in maturation methods.
Thus Cabernet Franc is planted on the estate in addition to Cabernet Sauvignon and the vinification is carried out according to Bordeaux know-how.
1968 was the first vintage to be unveiled to the general public. The wine surprised as much as it fascinated, and the international critics were very enthusiastic. Since then, each release of a new vintage of Sassicaia is an event for lovers of great Italian wines.
The Sassicaia vineyard is planted on a mosaic of soils with a varied typology that contributes to the signature of this exceptional wine. The important presence of limestone, clay and stony soils favours deep rooting and a sufficient water supply for the whole vineyard.
Exposed to the west/southwest, the vines are located at an altitude of approximately 100 to 400 metres with a density of 3,600 to 5,550 vines for the oldest vines and approximately 6,200 vines for the youngest.
In 1983, Tenuta San Guido was the first estate in Italy to be granted its own appellation with the consecration of the Bolgheri Sassicaia D.O.C.
Tenuta San Guido was a pioneer in 1942 when it decided to plant a grape variety other than those used in the production of Tuscan wines. It is considered to be the estate that gave birth to the "Tuscan supers" almost thirty years later.
In the 70s, a few Tuscan winemakers decided to break with the specifications of the Italian appellations in order to magnify the expression of their terroirs through innovative methods of cultivation and vinification. Recognised by the critic Robert Parker, these wines were quickly dubbed the "super Tuscans".
Sassicaia is one of the most iconic Italian wine labels, recognised by critics for its quality and extreme finesse. The 2015 vintage was voted best wine in the world by Wine Spectator and the 2016 vintage was rated 100/100 by Robert Parker.
This complex and aromatic wine combines power, structure and elegant tannins with exceptional length and ageing potential.
Since 2000 Tenuta San Guido has been developing its range, offering its second wine, Guidalberto, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese, and Difese, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese.
