Vinous

Neal Martin

The 2022 Paul Sauer is aged for 24 months in new French oak as usual, but, as usual, the wood is beautifully integrated and the fruit just shines: blueberry, black cherries and a touch of mint. Wonderful delineation and the higher percentage of Cabernet Franc really works here. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, very smooth and beautifully balanced. Not a powerful Paul Sauer, but loaded with fruit and demonstrating succulence on the controlled and sustained finish. Superb.

James Suckling

Claire Nesbitt

Cocoa, black plums, walnuts, bay leaves and spice box on the nose. Olives, too. It’s full-bodied, layered and well-structured, with firm but fine and polished tannins framing the dark, spicy fruit. Savory and tight at the end. 55% cabernet sauvignon, 27% cabernet franc and 18% merlot. Better after 2026.

Description

A fresh and elegant South African red wine

The estate

Founded in 1910 by the Sauer family, Kanonkop Wine Estate takes its name from a hill (kop) on the Simonsberg where, in the 17th and 18th centuries, a cannon shot (kanon) announced the arrival of sailing ships in Table Bay to alert farmers, who would then head to the port (50 km away) to sell their harvest.

The estate’s first wines were produced in 1973 under the impetus of Paul Sauer, a politician who served 41 years in the South African parliament, with the ambition of raising the country’s wines to the highest level.

Today, the 4th generation, embodied by brothers Johann and Paul Krige, produces cuvées acclaimed beyond South Africa’s borders for their pure, refined expression of Stellenbosch’s identity, a flagship appellation of the Western Cape.

The vineyard

Paul Sauer is made from vines located on Simonsberg and Stellenbosch. Around 30 years old, they are rooted in decomposed granite soils.

Winemaking and ageing

Fermentation in concrete vats with regular manual punch-downs. Five-day maceration before malolactic fermentation. Aged for 24 months in French oak barrels, 100% new.

Blend

This Western Cape wine is a blend of cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and merlot.
