Wine Spectator

James Molesworth

A nice plump, juicy style, offering lots of melon, peach, pear and yellow apple flavors mixed together and banded with notes of straw and heather. Creamy finish. Drink now through 2013. 2,000 cases made.

30% Grenache Blanc, 30% Clairette, 30% Roussanne, 10% Bourboulenc. Sweet and floral. Just a bit tight. Very fresh. (JR)

The 2011 Clos de l'Oratoire des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc is outstanding. A blend of 30% Grenache Blanc, 30% Clairette, 30% Roussanne, and 10% Bourboulenc that was aged mostly in stainless steel (Clairette aged in barrel), it is classic on the nose, with stone fruits, honeycomb, spice, mineral, and hints of brioche all showing. Structured, medium+ bodied, and with excellent acidity and richness, it’s a knockout white that will shine for 3-5 years, possibly even longer.

The Elegance and Freshness of a Great White Wine from the Rhône Valley

The estate

Located in France, in the Rhône Valley, L'Oratoire des Papes is an emblematic estate whose history began in 1880. The brand and its iconic Art Deco label were created in 1926 by Léonce Amouroux. The estate stands out for its deep attachment to its terroir and its environmentally respectful approach. Today, the estate belongs to the house of Ogier and skilfully combines historical heritage with respect for biodiversity.

The vineyard

The vineyard extends over exceptional terroirs within the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. Bathed in a very sunny Mediterranean climate and cleansed by the mistral, the vines enjoy ideal conditions for producing great white wines, drawing their minerality from soils rich in limestone fragments.

The vintage

The 2011 vintage in the Rhône Valley offered favourable climatic conditions, allowing the white grape varieties to reach optimal ripeness while retaining a fine acidity, a guarantee of freshness and balance.

Vinification and ageing

The white grapes are gently pressed and meticulously vinified at low temperature to preserve the purity of the aromas. Ageing is carried out with care to bring complexity and roundness to the wine without masking the expression of its terroir.

Grape varieties

Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Roussanne, Bourboulenc.
