Description
A Precise and Delicate Second Wine from Saint-Émilion
The estate
Clos Fourtet, a Premier Grand Cru Classé of Bordeaux, is a historic estate located on the limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion. Founded on an ancient medieval fort, it spans 22 hectares of clay-limestone soils. Since 2001, the Cuvelier family, with Matthieu Cuvelier at its head, has modernized the estate while preserving its heritage. The vineyard, dominated by Merlot, benefits from a unique aging process in underground quarries.
The vineyard
Located on the highest slopes of the Western plateau of Saint-Émilion, at the foot of the "Grandes Murailles", the Clos Fourtet vineyard spans 22 hectares resting on clay-limestone soils. The vines, averaging 35 years old, draw from this terroir all the mineral richness that makes the signature of the estate's wines.
The wine
La Closerie de Fourtet is the Second Wine of Clos Fourtet.
Vinification and aging
After a densimetric then manual selection, the grapes are received by gravity. Natural fermentation takes place in whole berries in 25 small capacity thermo-regulated stainless steel vats. Gentle extraction by manual punching down and a maceration of 21 to 28 days preserve the finesse of the aromas. After malolactic fermentation in vat, the wine is aged for 14 to 18 months in an underground cellar, in a blend of barrels (20% new, 78% of one or two wines) and jars (2%).
Blend
The blend of La Closerie de Fourtet 2024 highlights Merlot (80%), harmoniously complemented by Cabernet Franc (20%), thus reflecting the typical terroir of Saint-Émilion.
