Description
A lively and rich Second Vin from Saint-Estèphe
The producer
Owned by the brothers Martin and Olivier Bouygues since 2006, Château Montrose is an iconic reference of the Saint-Estèphe appellation. This 1855 Second Cru Classé watches over one of the most beautiful Médoc terroirs. Both in the past and today, Château Montrose stands out due to the quality of its wines, its style and its distinction, making it an essential and world-renowned estate.
The wine
Château Montrose’s Second Vin, La Dame de Montrose is made from the same vineyard as the Grand Vin. La Dame de Montrose offers another vision of the Saint-Estèphe terroir. Supple and dominated by red fruit notes, this wine offers an immediate accessibility in its youth.
The vineyard
Located on an exceptional site considered as one of the greatest terroirs in the Bordeaux region, the Château Montrose vineyard covers 95 hectares of vines. This vast single block vineyard, on a terroir considered to be the "elite core", is a rarety. Situated not far from the Gironde estuary, Château Montrose’s vineyard is planted on gravel terraces mixed with sand on the surface, while the subsoil is of a clayey nature.
The vintage
A winter much cooler than in other years preceded a mild and sunny spring which favoured an early budburst. Flowering was rapid and even at the beginning of June. The particularly dry conditions during June and July greatly slowed down the development of the vines. The rainy spells in September saved the vineyard, which benefited from both an excellent drainage and a drying wind on the plateau bordering the estuary. Harvesting is carried out from the 15th of September to the 8th of October in a plot by plot manner, passing in the same plot several times, if necessary, in order to harvest the grapes at optimum maturity.
The vinification and ageing
Rigorously sorted in the cellar upon arrival, the grapes are vinified on a plot-by-plot basis. The 55 batches are completed by 7 batch presses.
The blend
La Dame de Montrose 2015 is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot.
The tasting
Colour
The colour is an intense dark red.
Nose
Powerful and expressive, the nose blends fragrances of black fruit with subtle woody, toasty and smoky notes.
Palate
A rich and ample attack precedes a round and harmonious palate with supple and silky tannins. The finish is persistent and gives off aromas of ripe fruit.
