Description
Characteristics and tasting notes of Beaune 1er Cru "Aux Cras" Domaine Gagey 2019 by Louis Jadot
Tasting
Appearance
The wine reveals a deep red colour, ranging from garnet to intense ruby, adorned with subtle violet reflections in its youth.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with notes of red and black cherry, raspberry and redcurrant, intertwined with floral touches of rose and violet. Aeration reveals nuances of orange peel, sweet spices such as vanilla and cinnamon, as well as more earthy aromas reminiscent of warm stone.
Palate
The attack is crisp and fruity, leading into a palate that is both ample and dense. The tannic structure is refined and beautifully ripe, supported by a lovely vivacity. The finish is persistent, prolonging the spicy, floral and zesty flavours.
Food and wine pairings
This red wine pairs ideally with roasted meats such as a herb-crusted beef fillet or slightly pink lamb. It also beautifully accompanies characterful poultry, feathered game, as well as aged cheeses such as Époisses, Langres or Comté.
Serving and cellaring
For optimal tasting, it is recommended to serve this Beaune 1er Cru "Aux Cras" Famille Gagey 2019 at a temperature between 16 and 17 °C. This wine has a fine ageing potential and can be cellared until approximately 2039.
The richness and elegance of a Premier Cru from Beaune
The estate
Founded in 1859 in Beaune, Maison Louis Jadot is an emblematic figure of Burgundy. Although the family's winegrowing history began in 1826, it was in the mid-19th century that the trading house was officially born. Owned by the Kopf family since 1985, the estate is today led by Thibault Gagey. Recognisable by its label featuring a head of Bacchus, the property farms a vast vineyard covering numerous Burgundy appellations. It stands out for its strong environmental commitments and its determination to preserve the authentic expression of each terroir.
The vineyard
The "Aux Cras" climat is a Premier Cru located at the heart of the Beaune appellation, on the Côte de Beaune. Resting at around 260 metres of altitude on a steep slope, this terroir enjoys an ideal south-east exposure for ripening the grapes. The vines flourish on very stony, shallow soil, formed from ancient quarries, which naturally limits yields and encourages a strong concentration in the berries. The vineyard is managed according to environmentally respectful practices, including the abandonment of herbicides and the preservation of biodiversity.
The vintage
The 2019 vintage in Burgundy was characterised by overall warm and dry weather conditions. The growing cycle was marked by several heatwaves and periods of drought. These climatic conditions made it possible to achieve full ripeness of the grapes while promoting a beautiful concentration in the berries, particularly on well-exposed slopes.
Winemaking and ageing
After a careful harvest, the grapes are entirely destemmed. The vinification of the Beaune 1er Cru "Aux Cras" Famille Gagey 2019 takes place in open vats for around four weeks, allowing a slow and controlled extraction. The wine is then transferred to the estate's cellars for eighteen months of ageing in oak barrels, some of which come from the estate's own cooperage, in order to develop its complexity while preserving its balance.
Grape variety
100% Pinot Noir.
