An exceptional, full-bodied and structured wine from Piedmont
The property
Founded in the 19th century by the Falletti family, Marchesi di Barolo is a pillar of wine in Piedmont, famous for having created modern Barolo. Today led by the Abbona family, the property extends over 120 hectares in the prestigious areas of La Morra and Barolo. Combining tradition and innovation, it uses ancestral methods such as long maceration and aging in large oak barrels. The commitment to sustainability makes Marchesi di Barolo an essential reference in the wine world.
The vineyard
This Barolo wine comes exclusively from vines located in the eponymous commune, the cradle of the appellation. The soils, particularly rich in clay and limestone, give the wine its characteristic structure and exceptional aging potential. This unique terroir composition contributes to the aromatic complexity and the finesse of the tannins that distinguish this great wine from Piedmont.
The vintage
The 1974 vintage was characterized by a cold and rainy spring, followed by a hot summer and a dry and windy autumn. These contrasting climatic conditions led to a modest production with loose clusters, a direct consequence of the spring conditions. Despite these challenges, the quality of the harvested grapes was exceptional, giving birth to a vintage considered as excellent.
Vinification and aging
For the Barolo Riserva 1974, the carefully harvested grapes are quickly transported to the cellar where they are perfectly destemmed and gently pressed. Spontaneous fermentation is followed by a post-fermentation maceration of 40 days, allowing optimal extraction of aromas and tannins. Malolactic fermentation takes place in the spring. The wine is then aged in large barrels according to century-old tradition, before being bottled in the spring of 1980. The cork has been replaced twice, in summer 1997 and in April 2010, testifying to the care taken in preserving this exceptional wine.
