The refined richness of a great red wine from Tuscany

The estate

The estate’s first vines were planted in 1980 on soils which lie upon a blue clay vein from the Pliocene Epoch on the Masseto hill, which overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea near the famous small village of Bolgheri, Tuscany. In this pleasant setting with its intense climate, Merlot has managed to flourish wonderfully upon a terroir considered more suitable for cultivating Cabernet Sauvignon. For almost 40 years now, the wines by the Masseto estate have become true legends of Tuscan viticulture and Italian wines worldwide.

The vineyard

The vineyard at the Masseto estate is located in Bolgheri, Tuscany. The islands of Corsica and Elba can be seen from afar from the estate. The region enjoys a Mediterranean climate which is strongly influenced by the presence of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

The wine

Massetino is the "Second Wine" by Masseto and follows in the footsteps of its elder counterpart, first being produced during the 2017 vintage. Massetino 2019 by the Masseto estate was produced in the Toscana IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) and is a great Tuscan red wine with a strong personality that brings together opulence and elegance.

The vintage

2019 was a year of contrasts, with cold and rainy spells alternating alongside long spells of hot and dry weather. Thus, after a relatively classic start to the season, conditions in April and May caused flowering to be delayed by 10 days. Conditions from June were quite different, however, with a hot and dry climate setting in that brought about average temperatures that were 2 degrees higher than normal and an exceptional period of 45 consecutive days without precipitation. Two days of rain in July brought the situation back to normal, signalling an ideal start to the ripening process. Harvests began on 5 September with Merlot and ended on 1 October with Cabernet Franc.

Winemaking and ageing

Massetino 2019 was produced from separately vinified batches with a gentle extraction to preserve the fineness of the structure of the tannins. Fermentations were spontaneous with indigenous yeasts and at temperatures between 25 and 28 degrees. Once malolactic fermentation was carried out in barrels (50% new oak), ageing took place over 12 months before blending, followed by 3 additional months of ageing before bottling and resting time until the wine is put on the market.

Blend

Merlot (94%), Cabernet Franc (6%).

Tasting

Colour

Massetino 2019 presents a beautiful, dark colour, characteristic for the vintage.

Nose

This fine red wine from Italy offers an expressive bouquet sustained by black fruits, with nuances of spicy new oak and liquorice.

Palate

On the palate, Massetino 2019 evolves with richness and density through a velvety, refined texture. This texture is balanced out by a wonderfully fresh acidity alongside well-defined, firm tannins.
