Penfolds : Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz 2012

Southern Australia - Red - 14.5° Penfolds Penfolds 2012 G403/12
  • Parker : 91
  • J. Robinson : 17

Nicknamed "Baby Grange," Bin 389 by Penfolds, the Australian winemaker, is aged in barrels which previously served for the production of the famous Grange. Made of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon and 46% Shiraz, the 2012 blend has decades of potential cellar keeping. The dark and powerful Bin 389 2012 exudes dates and prunes aromas, but also mild spices such as vanilla, curry, and mustard seed... The palate is surprisingly fresh, with a beautiful underlying acidity, and silky yet powerful tannins. The soft and long finish is filled with licorice and anise flavors, as well as marzipan.

Wine Advocate-Parker :
A blend of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon and 46% Shiraz made with fruit from Wrattonbully, Barossa, McLaren Vale, Langhorne Creek and Robe that was aged 12 months in American oak hogsheads, 40% of which were new, the deep garnet-purple colored 2012 Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz is slightly closed with the Cabernet / cassis leading the nose marked by warm red and black plums, Mediterranean herbs, pepper and cedar. In the mouth notes of vanilla and cedar wrap around the warm black fruit core that is framed by firm, chewy tannins and just enough acid. It finishes long.
