Decanter

Strong Condrieu aromas of orange peel, peach, cinnamon and nutmeg, with flowers in the background. Intense salinity and mashed citrus. Unusually long for a 2024, the freshness combining with intensity, richness and softness. Extremely good. Fermented and matured in large, old oak barrels for 12 months.

Nicolas Greinacher

The 2024 Condrieu Jardin Suspendu immediately shows just ripe apricot and white peach, spring blossom, pastry and ripe apple engravings. Midlevel-bodied and fresh-focused, the 2024 is tidily structured upon lifting vivacity, concluding with stone fruit driven persistence on the long finish that's accentuated by quietly woven saltiness.

Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Condrieu "Jardin Suspendu" 2024 by Pierre-Jean Villa

Tasting

Colour
A beautiful golden hue, this white wine reveals all the characteristic brilliance of its grape variety.

Nose
Intense and complex, the bouquet exudes generous aromas of stone fruits such as peach and apricot, mingled with notes of orange peel. Subtle floral touches of honeysuckle blend elegantly with spicy nuances of cinnamon and nutmeg.

Palate
Full-bodied and concentrated, the palate displays a profile that is both tropical and perfectly balanced. A pronounced salinity and notes of crushed citrus underline a beautifully preserved acidity, leading to a finish of unusual length for this vintage.

Food and wine pairing

This white wine pairs perfectly with poultry such as chicken or turkey, as well as with Asian dishes subtly spiced with cinnamon or ginger. It also enhances seafood and white fish, such as halibut or sole served with butter sauces, or Mediterranean recipes featuring citrus.

Service and storage

The Condrieu "Jardin Suspendu" 2024 can be enjoyed from its youth thanks to the approachable character of its vintage, while offering a structure and concentration that reveal remarkable complexity.

Other characteristics

This wine has been particularly praised by critics, earning an excellent score of 94/100.

The mineral and aromatic expression of a great white wine from the Rhône Valley

The estate

Founded in 2009 by Pierre-Jean Villa, the eponymous estate quickly established itself as a key reference in the Rhône Valley. Located in Chavanay, the estate now spans 17 hectares. Fully independent, the estate is run by Pierre-Jean Villa, now joined by his children, Pauline and Hugo. Certified organic since 2021 and moving towards biodynamics, the estate stands out for its deep respect for terroir, illustrated by the restoration of old terraces, ploughing with horses and the preservation of massale selections.

The vineyard

The Condrieu "Jardin Suspendu" comes from a vineyard of around two hectares divided into three plots located in the communes of Chavanay and Vérin. The vines, combining plantings from 2009 with older vines dating back to the 1970s, thrive on extremely steep terraced slopes facing south. The terroir consists of shallow, stony sands resting on a bedrock of dark biotite or pale muscovite granite, giving the wine its uniquely distinctive minerality.

The vintage

The year 2024 was marked by particularly unpredictable weather conditions. Spring saw excessive rainfall during flowering, leading to coulure and millerandage. May and June, both very wet, encouraged strong disease pressure. However, late July and August brought sunny, warm and stable weather. The harvest, spread out from 3 to 27 September, took place under favourable conditions with a helpful breeze. Despite a volume loss of around 50%, the growing cycle allowed the berries to reach optimal ripeness.

Winemaking and aging

The grapes are pressed directly, crate by crate, without prior skin maceration. After cold settling for 12 to 24 hours, fermentation begins spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in 600-litre demi-muids. The Condrieu "Jardin Suspendu" 2024 is aged for 12 months, split between large wooden foudres (50%), neutral demi-muids (25%) and terracotta jars (25%). The wine is finally bottled without fining and with minimal filtration.
