Robert Parker

Robert M. Parker, Jr.

This seductive, sexy, accessible, forward vintage port boasts a dense purple color as well as copious quantities of jammy red and black fruits intermixed with smoke, earth, and licorice. Additional definition and firmness should emerge with time in the bottle. Sweet, layered, and full-bodied, it will be at its finest between 2007-2020. Importer: Maisons Marques & Domaines, Oakland, CA; tel. (510) 286-2000

Characteristics and tasting advice for Ramos Pinto's Vintage Port 2000

Tasting

Deep red colour, slightly lighter in the centre of the glass.

Nose
The nose is expressive, revealing notes of ripe fruits such as blackberry, redcurrant and plum, associated with a subtle touch of black pepper.

Palate
Offering a beautiful structure, with silky but still present tannins, the palate is marked by flavours of ripe fruits and dark chocolate. The finish, long and harmonious, is particularly tasty.

Service

For optimal tasting, it is advised to serve between 17 and 18°C after opening 2 hours before and having been decanted.

Food and wine pairings

This port ideally accompanies cheeses or a powerful cigar.

A fresh and intense Vintage Porto from Duriense

The property

Driven by the ambition to produce great Portuguese wines, Ramos Pinto, a house founded in 1880 by Adriano Ramos Pinto, has from the outset implemented a demanding quality strategy, from the vineyard to the cellars.

The vineyard

To do this, the property relies on an exceptional terroir by investing in the best vineyards of the Douro Valley, located in the Duriense region in north-west Portugal. While each has its own particularities, all contribute to the definition of the elegant, fruity and complex style of Ramos Pinto.

The vintage

The winter was dry, followed by a rainy spring in April and May, delaying flowering and slowing vine growth. Flowering, under wet conditions, resulted in low fruit set, suggesting a small harvest. Despite a moderately hot summer, the rains in July and August helped. In September, unusual heat accelerated ripening, leading to the harvest of grapes dedicated to the production of a high-quality Vintage Porto.

Vinification and ageing

Fermentation for 4 to 5 days in granite presses, after intense foot treading and without destemming.

Blend

Touriga Nacional (60%)
Tinta Roriz (15%)
Tinta Barroca (10%)
Other varieties from old vineyards.
