Robert Parker

Luis Gutiérrez

The 2019 Seña was produced with a Bordeaux blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Malbec, 15% Carmenere and 4% Petit Verdot, with the Chilean character of the high percentage of Carmenere. Most of the volume fermented in stainless steel, with around 10% in concrete vats, and the final blend matured for 22 months in French oak barrels, 80% of them new, and 10% in Stockinger vats. It’s 13.5% alcohol and has good acidity and freshness, coming through as medium-bodied, elegant and balanced. This is incredibly elegant, subtle and harmonious even at this early stage. It has floral aromas, notes of orange peel, a touch of creamy sweet spices and great freshness. The palate is medium-bodied, seamless and pure, with pungent flavors and a soft texture. It’s long, clean, defined and super tasty. I feel this wine is getting better and better with each vintage. The grapes were picked quite early, which helped to contain ripeness and seems to have been a great decision. There was also an exception in the Panquehue zone where the Seña vines are, where the summer was cooler than average, quite different from many other regions in Chile. 100,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in February 2021.

Decanter

The twenty-fifth vintage of a wine first made in 1995 by the Mondavi and Chadwick families is one of Francisco Baettig’s best editions yet: 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Malbec, 15% Carmenere and Petit Verdot aged for 22 months in French oak (10% in foudres). The nose offers redcurrant, blackberry, and cherry over a bed of sweet spices, cedar and peppers. Dense core and firm grip, it needs to be decanted or left in the bottle for a while longer.

Such beautiful aromas of crushed berries, currants, walnuts, allspice and nutmeg follow through to a full body with tight, ultra fine tannins that provide length and intensity. A finish of slightly dried cherries with wet earth, slate and stone. Chewy and fine-grained. A wine with soul and length. From biodynamically grown grapes. Give it time. Drink after 2025.

The 2019 Seña 25 Años is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Malbec, 15% Carménère and 4% Petit Verdot from Aconcagua Costa. The wine was aged for 22 months, 10% in foudres and the rest in French barrels. A vivid purple in hue, the complex, subtle nose opens up gradually, delivering layer after layer of blackcurrants. Touches of sweet and sour cherry, a twist of raspberry, sweet spices and notes from the aging process, such as nutmeg and cedar, fill the palate. Relaxed in the mouth, the 2019 Seña begins with a juicy, well-integrated freshness that feels light as silk, accompanied by extremely finely grained yet young tannins that sculpt the flow, promising excellent aging potential. The finish lingers long, repeating aromas of blackcurrant and sour cherry.

Inky dark purple core and hue. Pure and layered nose displaying ripe black currant, plum, aromatic herbal spiciness, tobacco leaf, fine wood and violet notes. Nice density and grip on the palate, ample dark fruit notes of cassis and cherry with good layers of sage, bay leaf, tobacco, liquorice and fine wood. Ample and structured with plenty of grainy tannin and a balancing fresh acidity, powerful yet in an elegant style with a very long and lingering finish.

With Seña 2019, the Viña Seña estate celebrates its 25th anniversary. It was founded by Eduardo Chadwick of Viña Errazuriz and the legendary Robert Mondavi from Napa Valley. Produced biodynamically, Seña 2019 is made from 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Malbec, 15% Carmenere and 4% Petit Verdot, at 13.5% abv. Bright, viscous garnet color with a dark core. Deep and spicy on the nose, Seña shows plenty of cassis and elderberry, along with herbal and floral notes—very alluring, attractive and layered—with a creamy richness reminiscent of blueberry cake. On the palate, Seña starts taut, deep, forceful and concentrated, with tremendous drive and energy. It creates an impressive mid-palate around which the entire structure unfolds in multifaceted aspects. Finely polished tannins and wide-ranging flashes of fruit are incredibly fresh and arranged with long-lasting persistence. This thrilling, gripping wine keeps pressing on and hardly lets go.

The 25th anniversary vintage, and an excellent showcase of the supple, nuanced fruits of this wine. Plenty of black cherry and bilberry purée, pure but layered. It has the rich depths that always delivers, where things are almost too much and yet not quite enough, still leaving you wanting more. Fragrant raspberry leaf becomes clearer as it opens in the glass, as does the saline minerality and a smoky finish, with the tannins becoming more delicate by the minute, highlighting freshness and juice. Located in the Aconcagua foothills, following biodynamic farming. Tasted twice.

Description

The refinement and complexity of an iconic Chilean wine

The estate

Located in Aconcagua Valley to the north of Santiago, Chile, Seña is an iconic grand cru from South America.

This exceptional wine is the fruit of a collaboration which began in 1995 between Eduardo Chadwick, one of the most emblematic ambassadors of Chilean wines, and the American Robert Mondavi, who is renowned as one of the greatest pioneers of New World wines.

Now exclusively produced by the Chadwick family, Seña is a refined, elegant and balanced expression of the most beautiful Chilean terroirs.

The vineyard

Following 4 years of searching for the most beautiful terroir, Eduardo Chadwick and Robert Mondavi acquired 350 hectares of untouched lands at the heart of the magnificent Aconcagua Valley in the north of Santiago, 40 hectares of which are now planted with a mosaic of Bordeaux grape varieties as well as Carmenere, the flagship grape variety for Chilean wines. The Seña vineyard is operated according to the principles of biodynamic farming.

The wine

2019 was Seña’s 25th vintage. A special label has been adorned on the Seña 2019 bottle for this occasion.

The vintage

A mild and dry winter preceded a warm spring which encouraged the onset of the crop cycle, followed by a relatively cool summer. While this vintage was considered hot for Chile, the Seña vineyard enjoyed a cooler than average climate due to its proximity to the sea, whih conferred a delicious, fruity intensity as well as a lively acidity. The harvests, which began on 15 March, gave rise to a structured, elegant and aromatic wine, with tannins that mixed with a great length, a sign of a very significant ageing potential.

Winemaking and ageing

Seña 2019 enjoys a 22-month ageing in new French oak barrels (80%) and in tuns.

Blend

Seña 2019 is made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Malbec (21%), Carmenere (15%) and Petit Verdot (4%).

Tasting

Colour

The wine is a beautiful and bright ruby red with purple reflections.

Nose
