Description
Tasting Notes and Characteristics of the 70 Years Old Mr George Legacy Final Edition Gordon & MacPhail 1954 by Glen Grant
Tasting
Appearance
A deep amber hue with mahogany highlights, bearing witness to seven decades of maturation in sherry casks. The liquid displays a beautiful viscosity with thick, slow-moving legs in the glass.
Nose
Of remarkable complexity, it reveals the rancio of old sherry blending stewed plum, blueberry jam and a subtle hint of cherry. Indulgent notes of vanilla fudge, roasted coffee and clove join in, elevated by elegant wafts of light leather, beeswax and antique furniture.
Palate
Velvety and full, supported by a perfectly integrated alcoholic vigour, the attack reveals deep aromas of tobacco and dark chocolate. It then evolves towards a surprising fruity freshness of red apple, caramelised banana and dried orange peel, before stretching out on notes of walnut, spices and toasted oak.
Food pairings and tasting moments
This exceptional spirit calls for a pure, meditative tasting, served in a tulip glass at a temperature slightly below ambient. It pairs wonderfully with high-cocoa-content dark chocolate, or subtle desserts featuring blood orange and stewed dark fruits. To be reserved for major celebrations or moments of silent contemplation.
Mixology
Given its venerable age, extreme rarity and the finesse of its aromatic palette, this masterpiece is to be savoured neat, without any artifice. Mixology is not recommended for such a collector's piece.
Other characteristics
This unpeated Speyside single malt has earned the excellent score of 93/100 on WhiskyFun. It stands out for its remarkably preserved natural alcoholic strength of 50.5% vol., a true technical feat for a spirit that has aged for 70 years.
An Exceptional Single Malt: the pinnacle of Scotch whisky by Glen Grant
Glen Grant: The natural elegance of a pioneering Speyside distillery
Founded in 1840 by brothers John and James Grant in Rothes, the Glen Grant distillery is a true pioneer in the history of Scotch whisky. Renowned for its innovative spirit, it was one of the first to adopt electricity and to design tall, slender stills equipped with unique purifiers. This singular production tool shapes a distillate of great freshness, light and fruity, capable of crossing the decades with rare elegance. Today, the estate is led by master distiller Dennis Malcolm and belongs to the Campari Group (since 2005), its current owner. Glen Grant carries on a historic savoir-faire while establishing itself in the market of very old single malts.
The ultimate tribute: 70 Years Old Mr George Legacy Final Edition Gordon & MacPhail 1954
Distilled on 24 April 1954, the 70 Years Old Mr George Legacy Final Edition Gordon & MacPhail is a Single Malt of absolute rarity. This liquid jewel rested for seven decades in a single first-fill sherry cask (First-Fill Sherry Puncheon No. 1823), carefully selected by George Urquhart, the tutelary figure of independent bottling.
This final edition masterfully brings the "Mr George Legacy" series to a close, while celebrating the 130th anniversary of the Gordon & MacPhail house in January 2025. Bottled at its impressive natural strength of 50.5% vol., this Scotch whisky bears witness to an absolute mastery of extreme ageing, in which slow oxidation and the influence of wood have never overwhelmed the original freshness of the distillate.
Presented in a luxurious gift box, this bottle is a true piece of heritage. It is intended for the most demanding collectors and enthusiasts of historic spirits, offering an unforgettable sensory experience that distils more than a century of Scottish excellence.
