Description
Characteristics and tasting notes of Two Hands "Lily's Garden Shiraz" 2022
Tasting
Colour
Deep ruby red in colour, this wine is enhanced by delicate violet and purple hues.
Nose
Generous, the nose exudes a cascade of blue fruit aromas such as blueberry, Boysenberry, and plum. With aeration, subtle notes of ground coffee, tar, dried seaweed, iodine, sweet liquorice, and violet come through to enrich the bouquet.
Palate
Silky and succulent, the palate seduces with its sleek texture and fine, perfectly integrated tannins. It unfolds intense flavours of ripe plum, blueberry, and black cherry, lifted by touches of black pepper and warm spice. The finish stands out for its length and suppleness.
Food and wine pairing
This red wine pairs wonderfully with full-flavoured meats such as peppered grilled beef, herb-roasted lamb with Mediterranean herbs, or long-simmered dishes. It also pairs beautifully with barbecued fare, umami-rich vegetarian dishes such as mushroom risotto, as well as aged cheeses or a charcuterie board.
Service and storage
Thanks to its fine structure, this 2022 vintage will be fully appreciated after prior aeration, which will release all its aromatic complexity. It also has excellent aging potential, allowing it to evolve favourably in the bottle over the years.
Other characteristics
True to a philosophy of minimal intervention, this wine is bottled without fining or filtration.
The authentic and silky expression of a McLaren Vale wine
The estate
Founded in September 1999 by Michael Twelftree and Richard Mintz, the Two Hands estate has become a leading name in Australia. Located in Marananga in the Barossa Valley, at the heart of Southern Australia, the estate's mission is to express the diversity of Australian terroirs. Now led by Michael Twelftree and Pierre-Henri Morel, co-owner since 2022, the estate exports to sixty-nine countries. Certified for its sustainable practices, Two Hands stands out for its uncompromising commitment to quality.
The vineyard
The grapes come from the prestigious region of McLaren Vale, located south of the Barossa Valley. The vineyard spans several renowned sub-regions such as Blewitt Springs, Clarendon, and Willunga Hills. The vines thrive under a warm Mediterranean climate, on soils primarily composed of brown and reddish sandy loam. These soils offer excellent drainage and retain heat well, promoting even berry ripening and deep root growth.
The vintage
2022 was marked by relatively cool conditions during the growing season. This coolness helped moderate the fruit's natural sweetness, resulting in berries of great intensity while preserving remarkable balance.
Winemaking and aging
Vinification begins with fermentation in open vats, accompanied by twice-daily pump-overs to extract colour and refine the tannins. After a seven- to ten-day skin maceration, the free-run and press juices are blended. Malolactic fermentation then takes place in barrels. The wine is aged for sixteen months in French oak barrels aged two to four years, with a small proportion of new oak (between 6 and 15%), to preserve the brightness of the fruit.
