Weinwisser

The Viñedo Chadwick vineyard in the Maipo Valley was originally Don Alfonso Chadwick’s personal polo field, to whom the resulting wine is dedicated as a tribute. Viñedo Chadwick is made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and is the flagship cuvée of Viña Seña. The hot, dry 2020 vintage posed a challenge for vineyard work. Dark core of color, pale rim. On the bouquet, the 2020 Viñedo Chadwick shows highly nuanced Cabernet fruit—layered, delicate, cool, and refined. Dense, spicy, and finely structured, it also shows on the palate, with a racy attack, plenty of structure, and slightly austere tannins. Everything is geared toward breed and fresh presence; thus, in terms of body and fullness, Viñedo Chadwick seems rather slightly delicate. Could gain further with time. 13% abv.

Description

A fine Chilean wine from the Central Valley with a seductive freshness and intensity

The estate

Since 1870, when Don Maximiano Errázuriz founded Viña Errázuriz in the Aconcagua Valley, the Chadwick family has maintained a passion for producing great Chilean wines.

Located in Puente Alto D.O. in the Maipo Valley, Viñedo Chadwick honours the memory of Don Alfonso Chadwick Errázuriz, father of Eduardo Chadwick. A passionate and visionary man, Alfonso Chadwick Errázuriz created the first wine brokerage in Chile in the early 1930s and in 1942 acquired nearly 300 hectares of fields and vineyards with the ambition of modernising the production of Chilean wines and actively participating in the development of their reputation. Having taken over the management of Viña Errázuriz in 1983, Don Alfonso Chadwick Errázuriz was joined by his son, Eduardo, who, since his father's death in 1993, has continued to drive forward the family's quest for excellence and passion for producing great Central Valley wines.

Don Alfonso Chadwick Errázuriz was also recognised as one of the best polo players in Chilean history. His passion for the sport led him to build his own polo field on the family estate, where two polo goal posts are still standing, and which is now a parcel of land that produces exceptional wines in honour of Don Alfonso Chadwick Errázuriz.

The vineyard

Viñedo Chadwick reigns over a 15-hectare vineyard of Cabernet Sauvignon vines that were planted in 1992. Thes vines produce fine and limited quantity Central Valley wines whose refinement, freshness and elegance are internationally renowned. In 2004 at the iconic Berlin Tasting, the Chadwick Vineyard 2000, the second vintage produced by the estate, was ranked first ahead of Italian Super Tuscans and Bordeaux First Growths. In May 2016, Viñedo Chadwick 2014 was bestowed a 100/100 score by the wine critic, James Suckling.

The vintage

2020 is a year marked by particularly hot and dry conditions. The know-how and rigour of the estate's teams have resulted in a great, aromatic and balanced vintage.
