James Suckling

For a wine of this rather humble category, this is extremely mineral. In fact, if you are in doubt what that word means, then here’s the explanation. But there’s also wonderful white-peach fruit that provides a wonderful contrast to the wet-stone character and lemony acidity. Long, pristine finish. From organically grown grapes with Fair'n Green certification. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Jancis Robinson

Paula Sidore

An initial delicate smoky stoniness drifts up from the glass like morning fog on the Nahe river. Apple and apricot with hints of freshly grated lime and lemon balm and wake-me-up-before-you-go-go acid. Nimble fruit expression, quiet grip and tremendous tension. Continued citrus zest on the long finish. (PS)

Description

Characteristics and tasting advice for the 2021 Tonschiefer Trocken from Weingut Dönnhoff

Tasting

This cuvée harmoniously combines a fruity nose with a lively and beautifully structured palate.

The richness and precision of a German white wine from the Nahe region

The estate

For over 250 years, the Weingut Dönnhoff has been overseeing a unique terroir of vertiginous slopes on the banks of the Nahe. Helmut Dönnhoff crafts, vintage after vintage, great German wines from a mosaic of terroirs, expressing the complexity, purity, and multiple nuances of riesling, pinot blanc, and pinot gris.

Recognized beyond borders as being among the greatest white wines in the world, the wines of Weingut Dönnhoff captivate with their elegance, aromatic richness, freshness, and exceptional minerality that exudes after several decades of aging.

Vineyard

With an area of 25 hectares, the terroir of this essential German estate is unique in its multiplicity of soils and exposures, offering ideal conditions for the grapes to reach optimal maturity. Subjected to rigorous care, the vines aged 20 to 70 years produce low yields but of very high quality.

The wine

Classified as VDP Gutswein, this Riesling Tonschiefer Trocken from Weingut Dönnhoff comes from a steep vineyard with clay and slate soils, giving this Nahe wine great elegance. The vines are approximately 25 to 45 years old.

Vinification and aging

Rigorous selection during manual harvests to retain only high-quality grapes. Fermentation is carried out in stainless steel tanks and large oak barrels, as is aging.

Blend

Riesling (100%).
