The Structure and Balance of a Greek Red Wine from Alpha Estate
The Estate
Founded in 1997 by winemaker Makis Mavridis and oenologist Angelos Iatridis, Alpha Estate farms 220 hectares in Amyndeon, in Macedonia in northwestern Greece. Still run by its founders, now supported by the new generation, the estate practices precise viticulture. Working with both traditional Greek grape varieties and international ones, Alpha Estate aims to highlight the authenticity of Hellenic terroirs with exacting standards.
The Vineyard
The Blend S.M.X. (Syrah, Xinomavro, Merlot) 2023 comes from the Amyndeon plateau, from a 19.06 ha area in the Florina region in Macedonia, where the vines thrive between 620 and 710 meters above sea level. This elevation gives the grapes natural freshness and remarkable aromatic complexity.
Vinification and Aging
The grapes for Blend S.M.X. (Syrah, Xinomavro, Merlot) 2023 are destemmed without being crushed, then cold macerated under controlled conditions. Alcoholic fermentation takes place at gradually increasing temperatures. This Greek wine is then aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, followed by at least 12 months of bottle aging.
Grape Varieties
Syrah (60%), Merlot (20%), Xinomavro (20%).
