Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of Angelo Gaja's Magari 2023

Tasting

Color
A brilliant magenta hue reveals deep ruby highlights.

Nose
Fresh and floral, the nose reveals a beautiful aromatic complexity. It exudes aromas of pure cherry, black berries, plum and blackcurrant, harmoniously blended with spicy notes of cedar, toasted incense and Mediterranean herbs such as fresh rosemary. Subtle hints of tobacco and graphite round out this bouquet.

Palate
Precise and concentrated, the palate offers a silky texture supported by fine tannins. Delicious aromas of ripe plum, blackcurrant and black cherry balance perfectly with a refreshing acidity. The finish stands out for its length and great harmony.

Food and wine pairing

This red wine pairs wonderfully with grilled meats such as beef steak, game dishes like wild boar or venison, and Mediterranean recipes rich in aromatic herbs (thyme, oregano, rosemary). It can also accompany firm-fleshed fish served with a creamy sauce.

Service and storage

For optimal tasting, this wine should be served at a temperature between 16 and 18°C, after prior aeration. With excellent aging potential, it can continue to develop in the cellar until around 2033.

Other characteristics

This wine has an alcohol content of 14.5%. It has also been awarded a score of 95/100 by critic Jeb Dunnuck.

The elegance and complexity of a Tuscan wine

The estate

Founded in 1859 in Piedmont, the family business gained international renown under the leadership of Angelo Gaja. Driven by a desire to explore new terroirs, he settled in Tuscany and created the Ca'Marcanda estate in 1996. Today, Angelo Gaja still oversees the destiny of the estate, actively supported by his children Gaia, Rossana and Giovanni. True to their values of excellence, the family refuses to buy grapes from outside sources and has recently converted their land to biodynamic viticulture, combining innovation with respect for the environment.

The vineyard

Located in the Bolgheri region on the Tuscan coast, the Ca'Marcanda estate spans approximately 120 hectares between Bolgheri and Bibbona. The vineyard benefits from a sunny Mediterranean climate, tempered by sea breezes. The vines destined for this cuvée thrive on a mosaic of complex soils, combining brown soils (clay, silt, iron) and white soils (clay, sand, limestone and pebbles). The estate favors biodiversity through biodynamic practices, including the use of natural compost and the planting of cypress trees.

The vintage

The 2023 growing season took place amid generally warmer-than-average temperatures, requiring particular attention to preserve the balance and freshness of the berries.

Winemaking and aging

The different grape varieties that make up this wine are vinified separately to preserve their individual characteristics. The final blend is then aged for approximately 18 months in French oak barrels, followed by several months of bottle maturation before release.

Grape varieties

Merlot (50%), Cabernet Sauvignon (25%), Cabernet Franc (25%).
