Characteristics and tasting notes of the Castas Escondidas 2023 by Casa Ferreirinha
Tasting
Appearance
This wine reveals a light ruby-coloured robe.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with floral notes of lavender, rosemary and violet, accompanied by scents of fresh red fruits. Subtle hints of spices such as white pepper, ginger and nutmeg blend with delicate oak nuances.
Palate
Ample and unctuous, the palate displays fine tannins and perfectly balanced acidity. The red fruit flavours and floral nuances extend into a long, elegant finish.
Food and wine pairings
This cuvée pairs wonderfully with meat dishes, game-based preparations or a platter of aged cheeses.
Serving and cellaring
To fully appreciate the Castas Escondidas 2023, it is recommended to decant it approximately two hours before serving and to enjoy it at a temperature between 16 and 18°C. The bottle should be stored horizontally. This wine can be enjoyed until around 2026. Once opened, it is advisable to consume it within 24 hours.
The authentic expression of the Douro's indigenous grape varieties by Casa Ferreirinha
The estate
Founded in 1952 by the visionary Fernando Nicolau de Almeida, the Casa Ferreirinha brand made history by creating the first outstanding still red wines in the Douro region. Today, this prestigious estate is owned by the Sogrape Vinhos group. Under the technical direction of oenologist Luís Sottomayor, the estate continues to showcase the richness of local terroirs and the diversity of traditional grape varieties. A true pioneer, it embodies Portuguese craftsmanship through cuvées that combine innovation with respect for winemaking tradition.
The vineyard
The grapes come from carefully selected plots on the estate's own vineyards as well as from long-standing partner growers in the Douro region. The vines, some of which are old field-blend vines, thrive on the schist soils characteristic of this geographical area with its steep slopes. The viticulture practised on these terroirs does not benefit from sustainable certification.
Winemaking and aging
After meticulous destemming, the fermentation of the Castas Escondidas 2023 takes place in stainless steel tanks. This Duriense wine then undergoes a long, gentle maceration to optimally extract colour, aromas and flavours. Aging extends over a period of approximately 18 months, split between tanks and used French oak barrels. A light filtration is carried out before bottling.
Grape varieties
Including 29% old vines, this wine is made from a blend of Tinta Francisca, Touriga Fêmea, Tinto Cão, Tinta Amarela, Rufete, Tinta da Barca, Bastardo and Marufo.
