The 2016 Antónia Adelaide Ferreira Branco is a 50/50 blend of Viosinho and Arinto, aged for 12 months in new French oak vats (2,000 liters). It comes in very dry and at 13% alcohol. This is not the first vintage, but this pricey white is a relatively new effort and attempt to create a high-end white. This is better than the last I saw (the 2014). Handling its wood rather well, it has a laser-like focus and plenty of acidity to lift the fruit and counter the wood. There is a touch of wood and perhaps a hint of reduction, but the long finish here is impressive. This probably will age beautifully—not that there is lot of track record. It should integrate its parts and become more interesting in time as it ages. There were 350 cases produced.

This has aromas of white lavender, juniper berry, grilled pineapple, lemon pith, cedar and smoke. Medium-bodied with a richly toasted and spiced palate. Ambitiously oaked and lacking some fruit. Drink now.

Description

A fresh and rich Douro white wine

The estate

Owned by the Sogrape Group, one of the most important Portuguese wine producers, Casa Ferreirinha is synonymous with one word: outstanding. Founded in the 18th century by Bernardo Ferreira, the house is renowned for its in-depth knowledge of the Douro vineyards and for the quality of its wines. Casa Ferreirinha was the first winery in Portugal to produce non-fortified Douro red wines.

The wine

Produced in a limited edition, this Douro wine pays tribute to Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira. Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira was a visionary and passionate woman who developed terraced vineyards in the 19th century. Paying great attention to the well-being of the winegrowers, she improved their daily lives by building schools and hospitals. Locals nicknamed her "Ferreirinha", in other words "the little lady Ferreira".

Harmoniously combining complexity and elegance, this wine is made from a rigorous selection of grapes from the Quinta do Sairrão, on plots planted at an altitude of 600 metres.

The vintage

Although the beginning of winter was dry and temperate, a period of rainfall and coolness persisted from the end of winter until spring, which affected the flowering period. The heatwaves during the summer are mitigated by cool nights, ideal conditions for refining the ripeness.

Vinification and ageing

Destemming and skin maceration precede a gentle pressing and a selection of the best quality must. Clarification by static decantation. Alcoholic fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. Aged for 12 months in French oak barrels. Clarification and stabilisation before bottling.
