James Suckling

This is a creamy, complex and layered Champagne that has aromas of lemons, truffles, pie crust, figs, spiced apples and salted caramel. It’s silky and rich, yet bright, with lively acidity and very fine bubbles. Long and delicious. Disgorged in 2024. Drink now or hold.

Vinous

Antonio Galloni

The 2008 Brut Millésimé Édition Limitée 160 Ans, a blend of 56% Chardonnay, 23% Pinot Meunier and 21% Pinot Noir, was vinified in small oak barrels without malolactic fermentation and spent almost 15 years on lees. The surprisingly youthful nose offers smooth, slightly lemony toastiness followed by a cloud of reductive smokiness. The palate showcases serene smoothness with a vein of bright, taut freshness surrounded by creamy mousse, revealing nuances of toasted rye bread, white pepper, fresh tart apple and smooth plum, all with smokiness and spiced overtones of nutmeg and cardamom. The superb freshness on the finish adds youthful verve and juiciness. What a lovely wine. Dosage is 8 grams per liter. Disgorged: January 2024. - Anne Krebiehl MW

Description

A remarkable vintage Brut champagne

The property

Alfred Gratien founded the eponymous house in 1864. Located in Épernay, in the heart of Champagne, the Alfred Gratien House has advocated since its creation a rigorous selection of grapes, vinification in barrels and a limitation of volumes in order to preserve the original character of the terroir and to exhale all the freshness of its wines.

The expertise of the Alfred Gratien Champagne House has been passed down from father to son for several generations and contributes to the unique style of each cuvée.

The cuvée

On the occasion of its 160th anniversary, the House reveals a limited edition of its Brut Vintage 2008.

The vineyard

Alfred Gratien oversees a vineyard of 1.56 hectares of Grands Crus and Premiers Crus vines, located on two emblematic terroirs of the Champagne, the Côte des Blancs and the Montagne de Reims. The house supplements its supplies by purchasing from about sixty winegrowers who have been loyal to the house for generations.

Vinification and ageing

The harvested grapes are rigorously selected before being vinified and then aged in 228-litre oak barrels. No malolactic fermentation in order to preserve the original integrity of the fruit.
