Wine Spectator

Bruce Sanderson

Concentrated and pure flavors of black currant, blackberry, violet and oak spice are aligned with a solid structure in this red. Accents of sandalwood and earth add detail as the dusty tannins emerge on the finish. Best from 2029 through 2046. 25 cases imported.

Decanter

This concentrated, powerful wine has superb substance and style, with ripe plum and mulberry aromas, and hints of leather, bay leaf, and black tea. The texture is tannic and full-bodied, with enough potential to age for 30 years if one is so inclined. The domaine’s two hectares here are spread over three parcels—each grown, picked, fermented, and aged separately. They will be reunited and bottled in March or April of next year. Open in five to seven years and drink for 30 more.

La RVF

The vintage’s richness takes the form of a fragrance reminiscent of ripe black cherry. Its delicate attack, the result of supple tannins, contrasts with the solidity of the terroir, expressed through a tightly knit texture. A fine age-worthy wine that will evolve over several decades.

An elegant and complex Beaune Premier Cru

The estate

Founded in 1750 by Simon Verry, the Chanson House is among the oldest in Burgundy. Owned by the Bollinger group since 1999 and led by Vincent Avenel since 2017, it farms an extensive vineyard spread between the Côte de Beaune and the Côte Chalonnaise. Based in the 15th-century medieval Bastion in the heart of Beaune, Chanson stands out for its pioneering commitment to organic farming since 2000 and for showcasing the prestigious Clos des Fèves.

The vineyard

The Beaune Grèves 1er Cru comes from the largest Cru on the central hill of Beaune. East-facing, this terroir is characterized by soils composed of sand, very small stones (gravel) and silt, giving the wine its distinctive minerality and hallmark elegance.

The vintage

The 2022 vintage in Burgundy proved generous in volume. Harvest took place from August 30 to September 13, 2022, making it possible to pick grapes of excellent quality.

Grape variety

100% Pinot Noir.
