A great red wine from Pessac-Léognan with a sunny profile
The estate
Located in the heart of the Bordeaux region, Château Carbonnieux is a historic estate whose winemaking origins date back to 1234. This prestigious property, recognized as a Grand Cru Classé de Graves, extends over a vast vineyard of 100 hectares under production. Today, the estate is managed by Eric Perrin and Philibert Perrin, representing the fourth generation of the family at its helm. Combining centuries-old heritage with modern environmental practices, the estate stands out for its consistent excellence in both red and white wines.
The vineyard
The exceptional terroir of the Pessac-Léognan appellation is based on a complex geological mosaic. The 55 hectares dedicated to red grape varieties thrive on Garonne gravel rises, clay-limestone soils, and sandy plots. The vines, averaging 26 years of age, benefit from optimal natural drainage, promoting perfect berry ripening. The estate is certified Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE level 3) and incorporates sustainable and organic farming practices, fostering local biodiversity and strengthening the plant’s natural defenses without the use of synthetic chemicals.
The vintage
The year 2025 was marked by an early and steady growing cycle. After budbreak at the end of March, the spring proved particularly dry. Flowering, though limited, occurred quickly and evenly in mid-May. Summer then brought very hot conditions with almost no rainfall. A few welcome rains in mid-July helped complete a rapid véraison. These climatic conditions resulted in a low grape load and accelerated ripening, requiring swift organization of the manual harvest between September 4 and 24.
Winemaking and aging
For Château Carbonnieux 2025, vinification begins with a 10-day fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, followed by a post-fermentation maceration of around fifteen days. The wine, divided into 25 distinct batches, was transferred to barrels between December 9 and 23, 2025. Aging then takes place over 14 months in 225-liter French oak barrels, with 20% new oak, preserving the mineral expression of the terroir while adding subtle complexity. Alcohol: 14% vol.
Grape varieties
45% merlot, 45% cabernet sauvignon, 5% cabernet franc, 5% petit verdot.
