Château Gazin 2019

A rich, full and heady nose. On the palate there's ripe blackcurrant, red cherries, raspberries and strawberries but also some mint, black pepper and truffle. Excellent precision and density with a seductive dark chocolate edge. Feels well handled with a sense of classicism. A powerful, muscular and confident wine, but with suppleness — this has density but also grace with a cooling finish comprising liquorice, mint and soft salinity. A great wine.

A perfumed nose of mulberries, plums, chocolate orange and cloves. Hints of toffee, too. Medium-to full-bodied with firm, ripe tannins. Caressing, velvety and rich core of dark fruit. So supple and polished. 88.5% merlot, 7% cabernet sauvignon and 4.5% cabernet franc. Drink after 2024.

The 2019 Gazin is super-impressive in this tasting. So balanced and elegant, the 2019 is aromatic, light on its feet and wonderfully nuanced. Crushed flowers, mint, sweet red cherry, mocha and tobacco are all beautifully lifted in the glass.

The showy nose kicks off with a beautiful display of flowers, red cherries, red plums, cocoa and wet earth. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, elegant and fresh, with loads of ripe, sweet plums, energy and a liberal dose of chocolate on the finish. Drink from 2024-2045.

Dark ruby, violet tints, discreet bright rim. Fine notes of noble wood, dark cherry fruit, some nougat, a touch of tobacco savouriness. Medium complexity, red-berry nuances, freshly structured, fine tannins, a hint of lemon on the finish, red cherries, mineral aftertaste.

While the 2019 Château Gazin isn't going to match the 2018, it's an elegant, solid Pomerol delivering spicy red and black cherry fruits, notes of cedary herbs and flowers, medium-bodied richness, silky yet building tannins, and a great finish. This elegant, nicely structured, balanced beauty will benefit from 3-5 years of bottle age and keep for 15-20 years.

A serious, deliciously Left Bank feel to this Gazin, with brooding cassis fruits and muscular tannins running through with the sappy salinity that I am finding in many of the great Pomerols in 2019. Layered smoked earth and tobacco leaf, together with a creamier feel to the fruits, become clearer as this opens, and this is built for long life. A yield of 44hl/ha.

The 2019 Gazin is composed of 88.5% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 4.5% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple in color, it sashays out with a gorgeous perfume of raspberry pie, rose oil, and vanilla pod, giving way to a core of crushed blackberries, cast-iron pan, and truffles. The full-bodied palate has a sturdy frame of grainy tannins and plenty of freshness supporting the dense, muscular fruit, finishing earthy.

[ En Primeur Scores 2019: 93-94 ] Never very demonstrative at this stage, Gazin shows great delicacy; the finish is long, fresh and well-structured.

A superb bouquet that so deftly creates a symbiosis between many elements. It offers nuances that swing between freshness and richness, between licorice and dark chocolate, or gingerbread and blackberries! On the palate, the wine shines with its ability to deliver a perfect balance between charm and freshness. Its tannins are compact and perfectly integrated, while the aromatic expression is still somewhat restrained; given the substance present, however, the wine has ample time to complete its full spectrum.

Supple on the attack, very juicy mid-palate, with brightness of flavor and a velvety flow; the wine glides through the finish, long, tasty, and noble, with plenty of flavor. It’s a pleasure to find it at this level. Final blend: 89.5% Merlot, 4.5% Cabernet Franc, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon.

All the aristocratic character of a great Pomerol is found in this Gazin: delicate, airy, fragrant, sensual, and carried by a magnificent framework—an architecture of tannins of supreme silkiness. The wine’s profile is feline, racy, brimming with savory juiciness, where black cherry is adorned with invigorating pepper. Delicious, and built to age.
