Decanter

A lovely Cabanne from owner François Estager—creamy, deep and packed with Pomerol signature. Creamy texture with concentrated liquorice root and softer chocolate shavings. Gourmet-edged with clear power. It shows sweet blue and blackberry fruit expression, balanced by fresh acidities. Consultant: Thomas Duclos.

Perfumed nose of blackberries, purple plums, violets, cloves and lemon peel. It’s medium- to full-bodied with fine, supple tannins. Creamy and silky with a juicy finish. 100% Merlot. Try from 2024.

The 2019 La Cabanne has a perfumed bouquet of black cherries, dark chocolate and light floral scents; hints of truffle emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, fresh and quite saline, with a touch of brine toward the finish. This should age very well in bottle.

Flowers intermingled with wet earth and cherries and a touch of cocoa hit all the notes here. Medium-bodied, elegant, refined, soft and silky, with freshness and energy to all the black plums and mocha on the mid-palate that carry all the way through to the ripe, lusciously-textured finish. Since 2015 La Cabanne has been getting better and better and 2019 is clearly the best vintage produced here yet. Drink from 2024-2040.

Medium deep ruby. Fine nose of butterscotch and mild oak with sweet raspberry, cherry and violet notes. Fresh and vivid palate with fine ripeness, rounded and grainy tannin with a rounded lush finish.

The 2019 Château La Cabanne is another solid release from this château. Revealing a deep ruby/plum color as well as spicy, complex notes of ripe black cherries, camphor, dried herbs, and exotic spice, it's medium to full-bodied, has a round, lush, pleasure-bent style, and the balance to evolve for 10-15 years. It's another terrific Pomerol in 2019.

96% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 14.6% vol., 42 hl/ha. Deep ruby. Complex bouquet with red-berry contours, sandalwood and redcurrant jelly, followed by light tobacco and licorice. On the mid-palate, tightly knit tannic framework, mineral core and finely austere texture. In the focused finish, the delicacy shows an introverted side and ends on juniper and plum skin. Can still improve.

Beautiful fruity intensity complemented by floral and spicy notes. Precise and dense on the attack, the wine stands out for its finesse and for well-wrapped tannins that showcase not their muscle but their finesse and freshness, while also offering a suave side. A pleasant, rounded, inviting wine that is already very tempting.

Vertdevin

The nose is fruity and offers a touch of indulgence, a lovely fine grain, intensity, a hint of power and a subtle, chiselled edge. It reveals notes of wild blackcurrant, ripe/juicy wild berries and, more slightly, pepper, combined with small touches of spices, cornflower and an imperceptible hint of dried blond tobacco. The palate is fruity, balanced and offers a juicy/tangy backbone, good definition, tension, juiciness, as well as a lovely finesse of smoothness, precision and aromatic purity. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of juicy/pulpy blackcurrant, juicy blueberry and, more slightly, strawberry, combined with touches of violet, purple/crunchy plum, as well as fine hints of licorice, tea, lily, sweet spices and cocoa. The tannins are well handled. Good length.

100% Merlot. Relatively pale garnet. Light but pleasing fragrance. Rather pale in every respect, but the balance is fine for an early-drinking Pomerol with no sharp edges. Just slightly hot on the finish. (JR)

Description

The typicity of a great red wine from Pomerol

The property

Located in the Pomerol appellation, the Château La Cabanne has belonged to the Jean-Pierre Estager family since 1952. This old property testifies to roots deeply anchored in viticulture since the vine has been cultivated there since the Gallo-Roman era. The name of the Château La Cabanne is associated with the time of the huts of the ancient Serfs and Colonists working in the vineyards at the time. Following a fire in 2010, the Château La Cabanne underwent a complete renovation. Since 2011, the property is equipped with a high-performance work tool that allows it to produce wines up to the standard of its great terroir.

The vineyard

The vineyard of Château La Cabanne extends over 10 hectares of vines located on the West slope of the Pomerol plateau. The vines are planted on clay soils, including the famous blue clay veins of Pomerol, while the subsoil is made up of clinker with the presence of various metallic oxides. The vineyard benefits from HVE level 3 certification (High Environmental Value Level 3). The grape variety of the Château La Cabanne vineyard is typical of the Pomerol appellation with a majority presence of merlot (94%), complemented by cabernet franc (6%).

Vinification and aging

Vinification without sulfite. Aging for 15 months in barrels (55% new oak and 44% barrels of one wine).
