Robert Parker

The 2021 La Tour de Mons exhibits aromas of cassis, licorice and dried herbs, followed by a medium-bodied, somewhat astringent palate.

High-toned, flirting with lift, with potpourri and cherry notes in the mix, followed by a light cedary grain on the finish. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2025. 10,000 cases made.

A very good delivery from this challenging vintage. Subtle minty oak spices to the fresh blue and red fruit. Currants, fine herbs, graphite and chili chocolate. Tight, vertical tannins give more gravity and density to the otherwise medium-bodied palate. Juicy, fine-grained and quite long. Drink or hold.

Showing much better from the bottle than it did in the barrel, the bouquet is loaded with dried flowers, red fruits, and savory herbs. The palate is fresh, vibrant, elegant, and creamy, with a nice sweetness to the cherries, spices, and a touch of chalk on the backend. This will be easy to enjoy on release and will offer pleasure for at least 12 years after that. Drink from 2024–2037.

Intense garnet, purple fading to ochre on the rim. Ripe cherries over subtle toasty aromas, hints of strawberries, candied orange zest, mineral touch. Medium-bodied, red berry fruit, light-bodied and fresh, nicely structured, mineral-salty, integrated acidity, red cherry finish.

Darker ruby-hued, with impressive depth and richness, the 2021 Château La Tour De Mons offers red and black currant-like fruit along with notes of smoky tobacco, scorched earth, violet, and graphite. A blend of 60% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Petit Verdot, and the rest Cabernet Franc, it's medium-bodied, with a supple, layered mouthfeel, some chalky tannins, and a great finish. It's another impressive, impeccably made Margaux to enjoy over the coming 10–15 years.

Ruby red, this is finessed and has an attractive fresh, crunchy character to the redcurrant and mirabelle plum fruits, with white pepper spice. Certainly a less concentrated frame than you have found in recent vintages, but it has balance and lift. Harvest from September 28 through to October 12. A 58ha vineyard now owned by Nathalie Perrodo with sandy gravel soils, with 20ha of vines uprooted since her arrival, and this was the first vintage where technical director Marjolaine de Connick was able to really work the whole thing from beginning to end, as the purchase took place in early 2021. 38 hl/ha yield. Blend different from the one recorded during En Primeur.

La Tour de Mons 2021 is medium to deep garnet-purple in color. It bursts with ready-to-go notes of redcurrants and kirsch, leading to touches of dried herbs and mossy tree bark. The light-bodied palate is soft and approachable, with just enough freshness and a savory finish.

Le Figaro Vin

A refined nose of Chinese lacquer, freeze‑dried blackcurrant and dried flowers. On the palate, flavors of dark fruit, iris and violet evoke a businessman in a pinstriped suit, briefcase in hand.

Yves Beck

Beautiful fruit finesse coupled with freshness, with notes of raspberry and spice. The wine, slightly creamy, is well supported by its tannins, which still need time to blossom. A sleek, moreish wine.

Decanter

Clean and clear on the palate, with a pleasant sense of calm, balanced acidity, a creamy texture, gentle strawberry and red cherry fruit, and soft, mineral‑edged tannins that give a salty rather than dry finish. Not too ample, well handled in that they didn’t try to build too big a wine, otherwise it would have felt hollow. Missing a touch of fruit density, but overall well managed with no bitterness or harsh tannins.

Description

An expressive and refined red wine from Margaux

The estate

With its origins dating back to the 13th century, Château La Tour de Mons is one of the oldest wine estates in Margaux. Classified a Cru Bourgeois Supérieur, Château La Tour de Mons underwent major renovations in the 1990s. Managed by CA Grands Crus since 2012, under the direction of Technical Director Anne Le Naour, Château La Tour de Mons produces wines that reflect the authenticity of the Margaux appellation on the left bank of Bordeaux.

The vineyard

Château La Tour de Mons 2021 is a Margaux wine made from a 58-hectare vineyard, all in one piece. The vines are 32 years old on average and are planted on Garonne gravel and clay-limestone soils.

The vintage

Although the 2021 vintage began with extreme conditions and thus, the vineyard required more surveillance by the estate's teams, the particularly mild conditions from the end of summer onwards were ideal and helped the ripening of the grapes. Compared to recent sunny vintages, 2021 benefited from cooler temperatures which gave a lively fruity expression. The freshness, elegance and aromatic structure of the Merlot grapes harmoniously blend with the flavoursome and charming Cabernet grapes and the complex and unctuous Petit Verdot.

Vinification and ageing

Harvesting from September 28th to October 12th. Aged in barrels (25% new) stemming from large French forests (Belleme, Moselle, Allier, Rambouillet).

The blend

Château La Tour de Mons 2021 comprises a blend of Merlot (60%), Cabernet Sauvignon (35%), Petit Verdot (3%) and Cabernet Franc (2%).
