Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes for Château Lafite-Rothschild 1999
Tasting
Appearance
The wine shows a deep ruby to purple hue, brilliant and opaque, which takes on subtle garnet highlights with age.
Nose
Remarkably complex, the bouquet releases aromas of blackcurrant and black fruits, interwoven with mineral notes of graphite and pencil lead. With aeration, refined hints of cedar, vanilla and dark chocolate emerge, evolving into tertiary nuances of truffle, forest floor and sweet spices.
Palate
The attack is supple and velvety, leading into a medium-bodied palate that is at once airy and intensely aromatic. Dense yet silky tannins support a harmonious structure that stretches into a lingering finish marked by fresh fruit, cedar and fine tension.
Food and Wine Pairings
This great red wine pairs beautifully with fine meats such as roast beef fillet or herb-crusted rack of lamb. It also elevates game dishes, as well as dishes showcasing black truffle or wild mushrooms, such as a porcini risotto.
Serving and Ageing
For optimal enjoyment, this 1999 vintage is best served at 17 to 18°C, after decanting for around an hour depending on how the bottle has evolved. It can be enjoyed now and will continue to develop until around 2030.
The Timeless Elegance of a Pauillac Premier Grand Cru Classé
The Estate
Dating back to the 13th century, Château Lafite-Rothschild stands as an iconic legend of Bordeaux, France. Ranked as a Premier Grand Cru Classé in 1855, it was acquired in 1868 by Baron James de Rothschild. Today, Saskia de Rothschild runs this prestigious estate, carrying on the family's tradition of excellence. The estate stands out for its strong environmental commitment, encompassing Natura 2000 areas and transitioning to organic viticulture. A symbol of elegance and longevity, this legendary growth combines tradition with scientific innovation to preserve the unique expression of its terroir.
The Vineyard
Located in the heart of the Pauillac appellation, the vineyard covers 112 hectares. The vines thrive on an exceptional terroir of fine, deep gravel mixed with wind-blown sands, over a well-drained subsoil of Tertiary limestone. This unique natural environment, surrounded by woodland and protected marshes, fosters remarkable biodiversity and gives the grapes optimal ripeness and great finesse.
Vinification and Ageing
The winemaking benefits from unique expertise, notably thanks to the estate's own in-house cooperage. The wine was aged for 15 to 18 months in predominantly new oak barrels, allowing the oak notes to integrate subtly while preserving the purity of the fruit and the delicacy of the structure.
Grape Varieties
Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
