Description
The freshness and elegance of a Pessac-Léognan red wine
The estate
Château Latour-Martillac owes its name to a tower standing in the main courtyard of the château. This tower is the remnant of a 12th century fortress that controlled the road from Bordeaux to Toulouse. Owned by the Kressmann family since 1871, Château Latour-Martillac was awarded the title of Cru Classé des Graves for both red and white wines in 1953. Today, Tristan and Loïc Kressmann continue the family tradition and the art of making great red and white Graves wines with passion and ambition.
The vineyard
A major name among Pessac-Léognan wines, Château Latour-Martillac oversees a vineyard of 54 hectares, 45 of which are dedicated to red wine and 9 to white. The property benefits from an exceptional location in the appellation. The Martillac plateau is composed of a mosaic of gravel dating from the Quaternary period, made up of flint, quartz, lydian and jasper. These soils are the preferred terroir for Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. The other main terroir of the property is located near the Garonne river where we find clay-limestone and gravelly soils on the surface. It is here that the Merlot is planted, as well as the white grape varieties of the property with the Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.
The vintage
A particularly mild winter and a warm spring led to an early growth cycle. The summer of 2022 was unprecedented in seeing several heat waves peaking at 40 degrees. However, the vines were relieved by rainfall, particularly in August, which allowed them to reach optimal ripeness. For both the whites and the reds, the harvest was particularly early, making 2022 a historic vintage.
Winemaking and ageing
This Château Latour-Martillac 2022 is the third vintage to be vinified in the property's new cellar. Aged in oak barrels (40% new).
